Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has emerged as one of the world’s leading javelin throwers in a breakthrough season, adding the Diamond League final title to his Commonwealth Games gold and building momentum ahead of the Asian Games in Japan.

The 23-year-old became the first Sri Lankan athlete to win the prestigious Diamond League final after throwing 89.04 metres in the third round at Brussels’ King Baudouin Stadium on Saturday.

Pathirage has been remarkably consistent in recent months, winning major competitions and producing some of the biggest throws in the world. His standout performance came at the Rome Diamond League in June, where he threw 92.62 metres to set a Sri Lankan national record and a world-leading mark at the time.

He also won gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games earlier this season, making the Diamond League triumph another milestone in a campaign that has established him as a major force in men’s javelin.

“I’m truly very happy about that. Coming from a small country like Sri Lanka, winning a major meet like this,” Pathirage said.

His winning throw came after Poland’s Dawid Wegner had moved into the lead with a personal best 87.47 metres in the third round. Pathirage responded with 89.04 metres later in the round and never surrendered the lead.

He followed his winning effort with throws of 85.96 and 85.76 metres before fouling his final attempt.

Wegner finished second, 1.57 metres behind, while Trinidad and Tobago’s former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott took third with a season best 83.99 metres. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada was fourth with 83.70 metres.

Pathirage said cold conditions had prevented him from producing an even bigger throw.

“Honestly, I couldn’t get a big throw today because the weather conditions were quite difficult. It was very cold,” he said.

The Sri Lankan entered the final as the Diamond League circuit leader following a string of impressive performances during the season.

India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra did not compete after withdrawing because of injury.

With Neeraj already of this month’s Asian Games Pathirage will be the key in the Asiad with Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem will also be there.

After a season of Commonwealth and Diamond League success, the Sri Lankan’s emergence has added a new dimension to the global javelin scene and raised expectations for another strong performance on the Asian stage.
