Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma finalised their divorce on March 20, 2025, after months of speculation and separate living arrangements.

Now, a report by senior journalist Vickey Lalwani claims that the split was primarily due to a dispute over relocation from Haryana to Mumbai.

The couple, who tied the knot in December 2020, began living with Chahal’s parents in Haryana after their wedding. According to Vickey Lalwani, while the two made frequent trips to Mumbai, Dhanashree was unhappy with the arrangement and wanted to move to the city permanently.

“This Mumbai-Haryana jhagda (fight) was one of the main reasons why this much-in-the-paparazzi-world marriage ended,” Vickey Lalwani wrote in a social media post. “Yuzi was clear that he wouldn’t uproot himself from his parents’ home and surroundings.”

Vickey Lalwani added that the couple “never got along much” due to their “totally different personalities,” and this difference eventually became irreconcilable.

Court proceedings confirmed that both parties filed for divorce in Mumbai. Their legal team requested and received an exemption from the mandatory six-month cooling-off period due to Chahal’s upcoming IPL commitments. The Bandra Family Court granted the divorce just a day before the cricketer’s schedule resumed.

Following the hearing, Chahal’s lawyer Nitin Kumar Gupta confirmed to ANI, “The court has accepted the joint petition of both parties. The parties are no longer husband and wife.”

According to Bar and Bench, Chahal agreed to pay an alimony of to Dhanashree as part of the settlement.

The couple’s relationship had been under media scrutiny for months. While they appeared together at public events early in their marriage, rumours of trouble began circulating in mid-2022 when they reportedly started living apart. Their court appearance earlier this month confirmed the formal end of their marriage.

Earlier, a social media post calling Dhanashree Verma a “gold digger” following her divorce from Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal has sparked controversy online, particularly after Ritika Sajdeh, wife of Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, appeared to ‘like’ the viral video.

The video, posted by a cricket-themed fan page, features journalist Shubhankar Mishra criticising Dhanashree Verma over reports that she accepted $550,000 (₹4.75 crore) in alimony.

In the clip, Mishra questions Verma’s claim of being a “self-made woman” while also referencing Chahal’s recent appearance wearing a T-shirt that read “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy.”
