Solo polyamory, involving multiple non-committed relationships, is growing popular among younger generations

The rise of solo polyamory signals a broader shift in societal attitudes toward relationships.

In a world where traditional romance has long been glorified in literature and cinema, a new dating trend is challenging the very foundations of love and commitment. The concept of solo polyamory – where individuals engage in multiple romantic or sexual relationships without committing to any one partner – has gained popularity, particularly among younger generations. As dating norms continue to evolve, this trend is reshaping the way people perceive relationships, marriage, and personal independence.

What is Solo Polyamory?

Historically, being involved with multiple partners was often viewed as deceitful or unethical. However, solo polyamory challenges this notion by allowing individuals to have numerous partners openly and honestly while refraining from any form of commitment. Those who practice this lifestyle prioritise personal freedom over traditional relationship structures, maintaining multiple connections without emotional exclusivity.

Single in the Eyes of Society

While solo polyamorous individuals may have several partners, they do not consider themselves committed to anyone. To outsiders, they may appear single, as they do not adhere to conventional relationship expectations. The absence of commitment means they are free to engage in relationships on their own terms, without the obligations typically associated with long-term partnerships.

Shunning Marriage and Traditional Love

According to relationship counsellor Nisha Bajaj, younger generations today are increasingly disinterested in conventional relationships. Many prioritise personal and professional aspirations over long-term romantic commitments. For them, dating multiple people is not about finding “the one” but about experiencing relationships without restrictions. Many also opt out of marriage entirely, questioning its relevance and long-term sustainability.

Men More Likely to Embrace Solo Polyamory

Studies suggest that men are more inclined toward solo polyamory compared to women. A 2022 survey conducted by the dating platform Bumble revealed that 61% of Indian respondents were open to exploring polygamous relationships. While some single individuals engage in this lifestyle, married individuals also practice forms of polyamory, maintaining multiple relationships outside their primary marriage.

Independence Over Dependence

One of the defining characteristics of solo polyamorous individuals is their staunch independence. They do not rely on their partners for emotional or financial support and prefer to make decisions autonomously. This self-reliance is a significant departure from traditional relationships, where mutual dependence is often considered a cornerstone of love and commitment.

The Psychological and Health Risks

Despite the apparent freedom and flexibility of solo polyamory, experts warn of potential downsides. Psychiatrist Muskan Yadav notes that those who practice solo polyamory may be at higher risk of loneliness and emotional detachment. Without deep emotional bonds, some individuals may experience feelings of isolation, leading to anxiety or depression. Furthermore, engaging with multiple partners increases the likelihood of sexually transmitted infections, raising concerns about physical well-being.

A Relationship Revolution or a Passing Trend?

The rise of solo polyamory signals a broader shift in societal attitudes toward relationships. While some see it as an empowering movement that prioritises personal freedom, others worry about its long-term emotional and psychological effects. Whether this trend will redefine modern relationships or fade into obscurity remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the traditional notions of love and commitment are being challenged like never before.
