The K-pop superband is a household name across the globe, where it has topped the charts in dozens of countries. Grandmas in Seoul and teens in Spokane, Wash., can dispense all manner of trivia on the group\u2019s members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">There\u2019s RM, the bookish leader; Jin, self-dubbed \u201cWorldwide Handsome,\u201d both the eldest and the goofiest; Suga, who once wished to be reincarnated as a rock; J-Hope, BTS\u2019s sunny and energetic den mom; Jimin, known for his charm and magnetic stage presence; V, enigmatic, mischevious and the one most likely to be wearing a vest; and finally, Jungkook, the golden child (or \u201cGolden Maknae\u201d) of the group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">But \u201cBeyond the Story,\u201d by Myeongseok Kang, is a book that knows its audience. Released on July 9 (the same day that, 10 years ago, their fandom adopted the nickname ARMY), it pulls together a tale \u2014 hitherto told in hundreds of blogs, YouTube videos, magazine articles and countless live video chats \u2014 into a cohesive narrative about BTS\u2019s music-making journey, with new reflections and interviews from the members themselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It also attempts to answer the question that still hangs over the group: What was it about BTS that transfixed the world? Labels would provide room and board for promising young talent, put them through rigorous dancing and singing training, and hope they developed into new artists, known as \u201cidols.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">BTS came together under Big Hit Entertainment (now known as HYBE), a relatively small company that had nowhere near the resources of Korea\u2019s top three labels. In 2012, the label launched a girl group called GLAM, which was already struggling when BTS was still being cobbled together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cI thought the company was going to go under,\u201d Suga, a rapper and producer for BTS, says in the book.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">With the pressure ratcheted up, Big Hit\u2019s hopes landed on the shoulders of seven young men in their late teens and early twenties: RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">For larger labels, unveiling a new K-pop idol group was like \u201ca major Hollywood production,\u201d the author notes. The K-pop scene is so competitive, it\u2019s essential for a group to have fans before it even debuts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Unable to compete with bigger labels\u2019 marketing money and industry connections, Big Hit went a different route with BTS. The boys connected to fans through candid video diaries and <a href=\"https:\/\/bts-trans.tumblr.com\/post\/128490042545\/150906-jins-blog-post-jin-makes-food-after-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog posts<\/a> chronicling their everyday experiences, anxieties and hopes, as well as teasing <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fnZsn-So-AU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unreleased music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">BTS members managed their own Twitter account, and later, Jin, one of the group\u2019s vocalists, started a YouTube series called \u201cEat Jin,\u201d in which he \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2vIgWtWhass&list=PLbaRmJ5dKOtswNMfb_93bEdWSGqIrxaAV&index=2&ab_channel=BangtanSubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ate things<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cAt the time, there really wasn\u2019t any way to communicate with the fans, and as I liked eating, I thought I should upload that, at least,\u201d Jin recalls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PEphaVHRWhI&ab_channel=BangtanSubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crude, unedited footage<\/a> stood out from the glamorous, tightly managed image that idols were supposed to present. The strategy proved prescient years later, when video streams became the default way for Korean celebrities to talk to their fans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">While BTS is widely seen as global ambassadors<b> <\/b>of K-pop, \u201cBeyond the Story\u201d posits that its biggest successes came from breaking the genre\u2019s norms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">In K-pop, lead singles are typically dance-heavy songs, released alongside a bombastic music video featuring razor-sharp choreography. \u201cI Need U,\u201d BTS\u2019s first big hit in Korea, bucked that trend, serving fans a moody, concept-heavy tune with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jjskoRh8GTE&ab_channel=HYBELABELS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an accompanying video<\/a> that leaned into themes of familial trauma and violence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cThe way we expressed the emotions was really important,\u201d J-Hope says. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hvUZb9NT7EY&ab_channel=BANGTANTV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">When I danced<\/a>, I got into the character of a boy hanging off the edge of a cliff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It was considered a big risk for a group that had been viciously derided by both online commenters and industry peers in previous years, and that was in many ways still gaining its footing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">And unlike most K-pop groups at the time, BTS continued to explore these darker themes in later work, such as the 2016 album \u201cWings,\u201d which drew inspiration from Hermann Hesse\u2019s Jungian novel \u201cDemian\u201d to probe themes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hmE9f-TEutc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temptation, shame and reinvention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h3 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"UVZJFZDX5BDDNJKA5ZJSQHE7DM\">\n<p>Pushed to the brink by success<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">While BTS started gaining a foothold in the United States around 2015, it wasn\u2019t until 2017 and 2018 that BTS truly broke into the world\u2019s largest music market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Americans hadn\u2019t been totally unfamiliar with K-pop before then; Psy\u2019s \u201cGangnam Style\u201d briefly surged on global charts in 2012. But BTS\u2019s sustained popularity was unprecedented. Songs such as \u201cDNA\u201d and \u201cMic Drop\u201d began cracking the Billboard Hot 100, and the group started taking its energetic performances to major award shows, as well as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D_nyuB8GbM8&ab_channel=TheTonightShowStarringJimmyFallon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/a>\u201d and \u201cGMA.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Then they would go back to Korea and do it all over again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cWe really had no days off,\u201d Jin says of that time. \u201cI wondered whether it was right for a person to live a life as exhausted as this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Navigating English-speaking press also posed a major challenge for the group. RM, the only fluent English speaker, frequently worried about making the kind of gaffes that would ripple across the Pacific.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Recalling interactions with the press at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XnUIGjXj0fg&ab_channel=BangtanSubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billboard Music Awards in 2018<\/a>, RM says, \u201cIt felt like I was having a mental breakdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Just as group members were burning out during this period, their contract renewals came up, leading to discussions about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vVs710bHkNA&t=512s&ab_channel=HanaJeon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whether BTS would break up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Because of how tight the seven members were, Jin explains, if even one person left, the group probably would not continue to exist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The book highlights their individual<b> <\/b>struggles with burnout and fame: Youngest member Jungkook took to drinking alone, and Jimin, a vocalist and dancer, withdrew by locking himself in a 6-foot-by-6-foot room.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cWe all wanted to say, \u2018Let\u2019s quit,\u2019 but none of us could bring ourselves to do it,\u201d Suga says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">But they were also performing at their best. Hit shows such as their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=60Ks0ybPuac&ab_channel=BANGTANTV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 Billboard Music Awards performance<\/a> buoyed them and led them to talk honestly about their struggles, the group\u2019s members say. RM, for one, worried that \u201csomeone from outside\u201d had written it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Proposed by Bang Si-Hyuk, founder of Big Hit and a producer for the group, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jWRMXiHhDjc&ab_channel=BANGTANTV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dynamite<\/a>\u201d was meant to win over fans who were just discovering BTS before the pandemic disrupted its promotional schedules. The disco-pop tune contrasted with the rest of the tracks on the album, \u201cBe,\u201d which struck a more somber and melancholic tone.
