She had collected glowing reviews for her Off Broadway performances over the years, and she had won an Obie Award for her role in Lanford Wilson\u2019s play \u201cThe Mound Builders\u201d in 1975.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even so, she was growing weary of the hustle. \u201cWhen you\u2019re in your 40s it seems really sort of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.nypl.org\/items\/dfb1ce80-02e7-0131-c08f-58d385a7b928#\/?uuid=ddcd6cc0-02e7-0131-d6f9-58d385a7b928\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">inappropriate<\/a> to be waiting for telephone calls from people to ask you to do a job,\u201d she said in a 1993 interview. \u201cIt just feels really uncomfortable and childish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her budding career crisis turned out to be an opportunity. In 1986, Ms. Berezin turned her attention from the stage to a highly influential behind-the-scenes role in the theater world: artistic director of the Circle Repertory Company, a storied Off Broadway incubator of talent that she had helped found in 1969.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Berezin died on Nov. 29 at the home of her daughter, Lila Thirkield, in San Francisco. She was 82. Ms. Thirkield said the cause of her death, which was not widely reported at the time, was lung cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Circle Rep at the time was often associated with the lyric naturalism of playwrights like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/25\/theater\/lanford-wilson-pulitzer-prize-winning-playwright-dies-at-73.html\" title=\"\">Mr. Wilson<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/12\/29\/theater\/29bishop.html\" title=\"\">John Bishop<\/a>, which centered on the daily struggles of the marginalized and underrepresented. Ms. Berezin declared from the outset that she planned to expand the company\u2019s focus to include more experimental and topical fare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHer goal was to bring in more imaginative work \u2014 Craig Lucas, Jon Robin Baitz, \u201d Marshall W. Mason, the company\u2019s founding artistic director, said in a phone interview. \u201cShe didn\u2019t go toward the classics at all. Under my tenure we did Chekhov, Shakespeare and Schiller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That new direction was not always met with a warm welcome at first. \u201cCertainly everyone was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1988\/11\/27\/theater\/theater-tanya-berezin-stages-the-future-at-circle-rep.html\" title=\"\">confused<\/a> last season,\u201d Ms. Berezin said in an interview with The New York Times in 1988. \u201cOur subscribers were confused; the press was confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was undeterred. \u201cWhat I\u2019m hoping will happen is that Circle Rep continues to confuse people,\u201d she added. \u201cIt will never have one specific personality again. In a sense, we are a brand-new theater that happens to be important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite the initial skepticism, Circle Rep came to flourish artistically during Ms. Berezin\u2019s eight-year tenure, a period in which the company broke new ground with plays like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/10\/21\/theater\/review-theater-the-destiny-of-me-larry-kramer-tells-his-own-anguished-story.html\" title=\"\">\u201cThe Destiny of Me,\u201d<\/a> Larry Kramer\u2019s intimate portrayal of a man dealing with AIDS; <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/04\/07\/theater\/review-theater-lacerating-greed-and-decay-but-doing-it-with-humanity.html\" title=\"\">\u201cThree Hotels,\u201d<\/a> Mr. Baitz\u2019s razor-sharp look at the capitalist mind-set; and Paula Vogel\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/02\/12\/theater\/review-theater-play-about-aids-uses-fantasy-world-to-try-to-remake-the-world.html\" title=\"\">\u201cBaltimore Waltz,\u201d<\/a> about a schoolteacher\u2019s relationship with her terminally ill brother.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was the most astonishing era,\u201d Mr. Lucas, whose critically acclaimed plays <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1988\/09\/26\/theater\/review-theater-a-christmas-fable-of-people-who-learn-to-know-themselves.html\" title=\"\">\u201cReckless\u201d<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1990\/03\/15\/theater\/review-theater-prelude-to-a-kiss-a-fairy-tale-of-souls-in-love-and-in-flight.html\" title=\"\">\u201cPrelude to a Kiss\u201d<\/a> received their premieres at Circle Rep in those years, said in a phone interview. \u201cShe invited an entire cohort of writers who were completely unfamiliar to the New York theater audience, people whose plays had been turned down by every theater in New York. She said, \u2018I\u2019m excited by what you folks are doing, and I\u2019m going to create a lab where we can hear new plays.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Ms. Berezin\u2019s contributions to Circle Rep went much further back than that. Before taking the helm, she had acted in many of its productions and mentored young actors, including Jeff Daniels, who joined the company in 1976.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Berezin \u201cwas the heart of the Circle Rep,\u201d Mr. Daniels said in a phone interview. Before a performance, he recalled, \u201cshe had a way of saying that one thing that became the key thought that you would tape to the inside of your forehead and carry with you through the entire play, and it defined the character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1977, Mr. Berezin appeared with Mr. Daniels in \u201cBrontosaurus,\u201d a one-act play by Mr. Wilson. \u201cWe got creamed,\u201d Mr. Daniels said. \u201cMel Gussow of The Times called me <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1977\/10\/27\/archives\/stage-fiery-brontosaurus.html\" title=\"\">\u2018empty as a balloon,\u2019<\/a> if I remember correctly, and he wasn\u2019t wrong. I was just beside myself, crushed, like I had been stamped out like a bug. She listened and listened, and what she said to me was, \u2018You\u2019re going to have to learn how to deal with other people\u2019s jealousy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Harriet Fayne Berezin was born on March 25, 1941, in Philadelphia, the only child of Maurice Berezin, an owner of men\u2019s clothing stores, and Bettye (Shifrin) Berezin, who managed the home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Drawn to the stage from an early age, she was active in theater in high school and went on to study theater at Boston University. A director in a college production nicknamed her Tanya after observing her skill at interpreting Chekhov and others, and the name stuck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She moved to New York in 1963 to chase her acting dreams and quickly became entrenched in the experimental theater scene flourishing in downtown Manhattan cauldrons of creativity like La MaMa and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/11\/theater\/donation-to-library-opens-new-portal-to-caffe-cino.html\" title=\"\">Caffe Cino<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She became close with Mr. Wilson, Mr. Mason and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1986\/07\/17\/obituaries\/robert-thirkield-49-an-actor-and-director.html\" title=\"\">Rob Thirkield<\/a>, with whom she formed the Circle Theater Company, as it was originally known, in 1969. She married Mr. Thirkield that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1974, the company settled in the Sheridan Square Playhouse, located in a former garage in Greenwich Village. That same year, Mr. Gussow of The Times hailed it as \u201cthe <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1974\/05\/12\/archives\/suddenly-real-plays-about-real-people-a-tiny-off-off-broadway.html\" title=\"\">chief provider<\/a> of new American plays to the New York commercial theater.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Berezin also acted on television and in film into the mid-2000s. She was seen on shows like \u201cSt. Elsewhere\u201d and \u201cThe Equalizer\u201d and in films including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1990\/12\/20\/movies\/review-film-from-a-living-death-to-life-in-awakenings.html\" title=\"\">\u201cAwakenings,\u201d<\/a> with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Jonathan Thirkield, and two grandchildren. Her husband died in 1986.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite its creative triumphs during her years as artistic director, Circle Rep continued to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/10\/10\/theater\/circle-repertory-enters-upon-adulthood.html\" title=\"\">struggle financially<\/a>. Ms. Berezin left her post in 1994 and for more than two decades worked as an acting coach. The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1996\/10\/08\/theater\/off-broadway-s-circle-rep-posts-its-closing-notice.html\" title=\"\">company closed<\/a> in 1996.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Upon leaving the company, Ms. Berezin told The Times of her plans to appear in a pilot for a series that Montel Williams was trying to get off the ground. Her role?
