There\u2019s always that whiff of manufactured serendipity. The old, <i>Oh, come on in \u2014 just took these steaks off the grill<\/i>. \u201cLike, \u2018I arrive at their apartment and they\u2019re in the middle of painting,\u2019\u201d Novak says faux-airily. But today, a cold and humid Sunday afternoon in December, while she adjusts to the idea of being a profile subject, the L.A.-based comedian has invited me along for a convincingly normal and human set of downtown-Manhattan errands while we talk: a latte stop, a short walk around the block to get a glimpse of sunlight for the day and a browse through an upscale clothing boutique without buying anything.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">By the time we settle in at a table in the lobby of the Ludlow Hotel, Novak, 41, has reconciled with the fact that an impression will be gotten, whether it\u2019s the one she was hoping for or not. She has reached the point, she says, of \u201cbeing like: \u2018F— it, dawg. Be observed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body grid-body grid-center\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It is not long before she remarks offhandedly that this particular Lower East Side lobby \u2014 cozy and lamplit with a fireplace and sultry tufted couches \u2014 is a perfect place to pretend to be a ghost.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It is obvious even in just a few moments how much Novak thinks about the chasm between intent and interpretation, and<b> <\/b>about \u201cthe embarrassment of the flesh,\u201d as she puts it. Both<b> <\/b>of which she explores in her Netflix comedy special, \u201cGet on Your Knees,\u201d which will debut Tuesday. Its sensational 2019 stage run at New York\u2019s Cherry Lane Theatre and, later, the Lucille Lortel was extended multiple times; it was named a New York Times Critic\u2019s Pick. Oh, and: It\u2019s a 90-minute show about blow jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Or that\u2019s the simple, arguably reductive way to think about it. The stand-up set is also<b> <\/b>an examination of our collective assumptions about what\u2019s happening in the mind and spirit when the body assumes the titular pose,<b> <\/b>and a rebuttal to the traditional idea that a woman degrades in value with each sexual experience (or, as Novak calls it, \u201cthe scratch-and-sniff model of personhood\u201d). It\u2019s a blisteringly intellectual, deeply funny sermon examining the absurdity of our longest-held notions about the power dynamics of sex \u2014 one that had a longer journey from stage to screen than anyone involved expected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">To witness the show itself \u2014 which first gained momentum at the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe under the early title \u201cHow Embarrassing for Her\u201d \u2014 is to sit directly before a fire hose of frank postulation about sex that\u2019s as scholarly as it is X-rated, nimbly invoking the works of the Greek mythologists, of Philip Roth, of Sharon Olds and Tony Robbins and Nietzsche. She narrates an early episode of teenage experimentation in an unfinished basement as Nabokov would. The advice commonly given to young women to \u201ctake it slow\u201d in a dating situation where there\u2019s hope for a real relationship? Novak condemns it with a flourish: \u201cNo. No! The hubris astonishes. Death is coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"wpds-c-sFUaP wpds-c-sFUaP-jtHNGr-variant-interstitial wpds-c-sFUaP-iPJLV-css hide-for-print\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" data-testid=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/washingtonpost.az1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_9pfsRSvDZCIDKtg\">How do you think we’re doing? Take a short survey about the new Style.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Novak<b> <\/b>chose her onstage uniform of a gray T-shirt and skinny jeans because it\u2019s \u201cthe most neutral, kind of nothing outfit,\u201d making virtually zero statements that might add to or detract or distract from the show. It\u2019s an effective tactic, its modesty underlining the fact that it\u2019s not Novak\u2019s free-spirited sexuality that shocks so much as her self-possession.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t worried about saving myself for marriage,\u201d she declares. \u201cIf I was going to present something to my eventual true love, I\u2019d want it to be a collection of sexual skills and an attitude of confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Novak\u2019s other works approach the world with the same quizzical stance toward traditional mores. Her<b> <\/b>2016 depression memoir\/self-help guide, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/236812\/how-to-weep-in-public-by-jacqueline-novak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Weep in Public<\/a>,\u201d aims not to cure or motivate or in any way heal the depressed person reading it, but to keep them company with a set of compassionate, funny anecdotes from her own experiences at her lowest lows. Novak also co-hosts the podcast \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/poog-with-kate-berlant-and-jacqueline-novak\/id1537404238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poog<\/a>\u201d alongside fellow comedian Kate Berlant; it\u2019s an exploration of the modern wellness industry that tests its vast range of serums and services, not for the nobler purpose of separating the scammy from the effective but for the pure love of trying products.<b> <\/b>In an early episode, Novak delivered what acts as something of a thesis statement for the project: \u201cPeople talk about snake-oil salesmen. I\u2019m <i>looking<\/i> for a snake-oil salesman. Where are they? I\u2019m looking to buy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It\u2019s the \u201cPoog\u201d live tour that has brought Novak to New York on this dreary pre-Christmas weekend. At our table in the moody Ludlow lobby, Novak tells me that she always envisioned \u201cGet on Your Knees\u201d as a streaming special.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like, \u2018I want to have a New York stage show.\u2019 It was like, \u2018I want to make this comedy special,\u2019 and in order to do that, there\u2019s a lot of paths. I was open to anything,\u201d Novak says. \u201cIf there was a bar that would have let me do it and I could get the people in, I would have done that. I was like, \u2018I\u2019ll do anything to get this show to a point where I believe in it enough that I would go banging doors down, saying, \u201cWatch this. Put it on your streaming service.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Instead, \u201cGet on Your Knees\u201d was brought to the stage and screen by a trio of well-known, well-loved funny people who also happen to be Novak\u2019s friends. Natasha Lyonne produced the stage show and directed the Netflix special. Comedian and \u201cSearch Party\u201d star John Early, who met Novak through his frequent collaborator Berlant, directed the show for the stage. Comedy multi-hyphenate Mike Birbiglia, who performed in the same Georgetown University improv troupe as Novak, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, served as executive producer for the stage show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Of course, all three swear they were just there for moral support. Lyonne came on board after seeing an early iteration of the show in Los Angeles, and she says very little about the show required coaching or tweaking even then. \u201cI was just blown away, immediately, by her poetry and comedy, and how literary she was but also how obscenely hilarious she was,\u201d Lyonne remembers. \u201cI was obsessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Early, too, says he mostly worked with Novak on bolstering what she\u2019d already created. \u201cMy contribution was just kind of helping her plant her feet, talk to us directly and not be embarrassed by just \u2026 the ritual of theater,\u201d Early says with a laugh. He also preserved the show\u2019s pure stand-up comedy feel, he tells me, protecting it from the corny, self-serious theatrical conventions that a capital-T theater director might have inflicted on it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Still, \u201cI want to be very clear: This is really all a work of Jacqueline\u2019s genius,\u201d Early says. \u201cI was just kind of cheerleading throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Birbiglia financed the show\u2019s New York run with his wife after its original funding fell through. \u201cI was an extra set of eyes and ears since I had done a bunch of solo shows before,\u201d Birbiglia wrote in an email. \u201cBut the thing about Jacqueline is that her comedy voice is so singular, and when someone\u2019s voice is like that, you\u2019re really just trying to encourage them to be <i>them<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cShe operates on a deeply funny and specific frequency,\u201d Birbiglia adds. \u201cAnd so when she put on \u2018Get on Your Knees\u2019 downtown, it became the \u2018it\u2019 show of New York City because it was like her and thousands and thousands of people on this frequency at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Indeed, \u201cGet on Your Knees\u201d seems to have struck a cathartic chord with audiences. The show\u2019s most autobiographical sections expose a phenomenon familiar to many young women: that there\u2019s hardly any daylight at all between the shame of having insufficient sexual knowledge and the shame of clearly having some. In one wild moment, Novak reenacts her own first attempt at oral sex while bemoaning the fact that she had no second mouth with which to acknowledge her inexperience in real time. Soon afterward, she\u2019s recalling how the moment she felt she\u2019d finally put together an adequate set of skills coincided with learning she\u2019d gained a reputation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cFor me, the most vulnerable part of the show is [describing] that humiliation,\u201d Novak says. \u201cYou\u2019re fighting so hard to gain a kind of sexual confidence or vocabulary, and then the moment you have it, it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, God.\u2019<i> <\/i>You\u2019re running so hard in one direction, so afraid of one extreme, and then you have to be like: \u2018No, I\u2019m the innocent one! You don\u2019t understand!\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cTo be misunderstood in this way, it\u2019s like, \u2018This is such hard-won swagger!\u2019\u201d she adds with a laugh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">In early 2020, after the conclusion of the New York run, Novak embarked on a \u201cGet on Your Knees\u201d tour \u2014 to \u201cget it in my bones,\u201d she says \u2014 with a plan to tape the show and sell it as a special. After just one tour date in Canada, though, the rest of 2020 was effectively canceled. \u201cI wasn\u2019t as crushed as it would seem like I would be. Because after however long doing comedy\u201d \u2014 it has been some two decades since Novak started out on the Washington-area comedy circuit, honing her skills at spots such as the DC Improv and the now-defunct Wiseacres in Tysons Corner \u2014 \u201cI was just proud. Grateful to be, like, one of the big boys who had dates to cancel<i>.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">She restarted the whole process in the summer of 2021: a run at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York, followed \u2014 this time successfully \u2014 by a multi-city, multiyear tour. The special was finally filmed at Manhattan\u2019s Town Hall in June 2023, on a bare stage with camera and lighting work inspired by the analog look of Richard Pryor\u2019s and George Carlin\u2019s old specials from the 1970s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Now, nearly five years after its New York debut, \u201cGet on Your Knees\u201d is finally taking on the form Novak and her team<b> <\/b>always envisioned for it. Watching the final edit of the special, Lyonne felt more moved than usual imagining its future audience. \u201cJust imagining kids in their junior year in high school, or in college, taking on the dating scene. Even full-on grown-ups having this experience, of like, \u2018Holy s—, I\u2019m not alone in this world.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Novak, meanwhile, is adjusting to the reality that her bold declarations \u2014 that the penis, for example, in its fragility and sensitivity and general moodiness, is the human body\u2019s most feminine body part \u2014 will soon be fully subject to interpretation beyond her control.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Her hope is that viewers will understand \u201cGet on Your Knees\u201d as a useful exercise in kicking the tires of conventional ideas. \u201cI make that argument about the penis not because I think we all got it wrong,\u201d Novak says. \u201cIt\u2019s just to demonstrate that it\u2019s all a choice, how we\u2019re looking at it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cSaying, \u2018<i>This <\/i>is dignity and <i>this<\/i> is shame,\u2019 or, \u2018<i>This<\/i> is embarrassing and <i>this<\/i> is respectable\u2019 \u2014 we\u2019re locked in on certain judgments of how things are,\u201d she adds, \u201cand I find that sort of rude to the human spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/2024\/01\/22\/jacqueline-novak-get-on-your-knees-netflix\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Her acclaimed show, \u2018Get on Your Knees,\u2019 thoughtfully and hilariously interrogates gender dynamics January 22, 2024 at 5:00 a.m. EST Jacqueline Novak’s stage show, “Get on Your Knees,” has become a Netflix stand-up special.
