That&#8217;s a little more than half of the $29.10 per share that analysts expected, according to LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The guidance adds to Wall Street&#8217;s concerns about health insurance company profits falling as medical costs jump. <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UNH\/\">UnitedHealth<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> on Friday also reported its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedhealthgroup.com\/newsroom\/2024\/2024-01-12-uhg-reports-fourth-quarter-results.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jump<\/a> in medical costs, though it was less extreme than Humana&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Humana shares closed 10% lower Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Its forecast dragged down other health insurance stocks. Shares of both UnitedHealth and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CVS\/\">CVS Health<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> closed around 4% and 3% lower, respectively. <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CI\/\">Cigna&#8217;<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>s stock closed almost 2% lower, and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CNC\/\">Centene<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> shares ended more than 2% lower. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ELV\/\">Elevance Health<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> closed more than 1% higher on Thursday. Unlike Humana, the insurer forecast 2024 earnings above estimates Wednesday, after higher premiums in its commercial business helped control medical costs in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Expectations for Humana&#8217;s 2024 earnings guidance were already low after the company warned last week that medical costs were running higher than expected in the fourth quarter. It signaled that higher expenses could cut into its profits in the year ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Humana confirmed that pessimism Thursday. It reported a medical benefit ratio \u2014 the percentage of payout on claims compared with premiums \u2014 of 90.7% for the fourth quarter. Analysts had estimated that the ratio would be 89.7% for the period, according to LSEG.<\/p>\n<p>The insurer cited an increase in outpatient services, such as orthopedic surgeries, and in inpatient care in November and December among patients enrolled in Medicare Advantage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Medicare Advantage plans are privately run versions of the federal government&#8217;s Medicare program, mostly for people ages 65 and older. Those plans are one of Humana&#8217;s biggest forms of coverage outside insurance it provides for military families and retirees.<\/p>\n<p>Humana posted fourth-quarter revenue<strong> <\/strong>of $26.46 billion, which beat analysts&#8217; estimate of $25.42 billion, according to LSEG data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the company posted a loss of $591 million, or $4.42 per share, in the fourth quarter. That compares with a loss of $71 million, or 12 cents per share, during the same period a year ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Excluding certain items, Humana reported a loss of 11 cents per share.
