{"id":13,"date":"2023-07-08T17:16:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-08T17:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/2023\/07\/08\/study-reveals-how-snakes-under-stress-can-be-similar-to-humans\/"},"modified":"2023-07-08T17:16:38","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T17:16:38","slug":"study-reveals-how-snakes-under-stress-can-be-similar-to-humans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/world\/study-reveals-how-snakes-under-stress-can-be-similar-to-humans\/","title":{"rendered":"Study reveals how snakes under stress can be similar to humans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"medium-insert-images ui-sortable\">\n<figure contenteditable=\"false\">\n<figcaption contenteditable=\"true\" class=\"\" data-gramm=\"false\" wt-ignore-input=\"true\">This picture shows a Southern Pacific rattlesnake. \u2014 Unsplash\/File<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Did you know that snakes can experience stress and need another member of their species to calm them down, just like humans?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new study released on Thursday in the journal <i>Frontiers <\/i>in Ethology suggests that slimy reptiles, like humans, may depend on others of their species to remain calm under stress.<\/p>\n<p>Southern California is home to many Crotalus helleri, or Southern Pacific rattlesnakes, on which the study&#8217;s authors concentrated their research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When snakes experienced stressful situations with a companion present, their heart rates were found to be lower than when the stress was experienced alone.<\/p>\n<p>According to lead study author Chelsea Martin, a doctoral candidate at Loma Linda University in California, these results represented the first time social buffering, a phenomenon where having companions around can reduce biological reactions to stress, had been documented in reptiles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It has previously been seen in nonhuman primates, rodents, birds, and humans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Snakes and reptiles are really interesting because I think they\u2019re often overlooked in their behavior,&#8221; Martin said. &#8220;People are often really afraid of snakes \u2026 (but) they\u2019re not so different from us. They have moms who take care of their children. They\u2019re able to reduce their stress when they\u2019re together. That\u2019s something that we as humans do, too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>How to study snake stress<\/h2>\n<p>Martin and Dr William Hayes,\u00a0an earth and biological sciences professor at Loma Linda University, designed a study to investigate snake stress response by removing rattlesnakes from people&#8217;s homes that do not want them in their proximity, <i>CNN <\/i>reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had noticed that when he had two snakes in a bucket together as he was driving down the mountain that they seem to rattle less or not rattle at all \u2014 as opposed to if he just had one snake in the bucket,\u201d Martin said. Rattlesnakes tend to shake their tail, emitting their signature warning sound, when threatened.<\/p>\n<div class=\"medium-insert-images ui-sortable\">\n<figure contenteditable=\"false\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/assets\/uploads\/updates\/2023-07-08\/498025_8403868_updates.jpg\" alt=\"This representational picture shows a snake. \u2014 Unsplash\/File\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" class=\"\"\/><figcaption contenteditable=\"true\" class=\"\" data-gramm=\"false\" wt-ignore-input=\"true\">This representational picture shows a snake. \u2014 Unsplash\/File<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>A team created an experiment for the rattlesnakes after one of their colleagues suggested that this behaviour might indicate that the snakes were engaging in social buffering.<\/p>\n<p>25 Southern Pacific rattlesnakes were used, some from the mountains, where they are known to spend the cold months in one another\u2019s company, while others from the lowlands, where they do not spend the cold months together, were captured in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Researchers placed snakes in 19-liter plastic buckets and tested their stress levels using a heart rate monitor as part of a study to understand the impact of companionship on stress response.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They found that having a companion significantly reduced heart rates in both lowland and mountain-dwelling snakes, as well as males and females.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Furthermore, the study authors suggest that social buffering behaviour in rattlesnakes could have significant implications for reptiles in general.
