In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tigerwoods\/status\/1744388880348991727?s=61&amp;t=mvshv-2GAX9rupGX_CMqug\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">January<\/a>, Mr. Woods announced the end of his 27-year deal with Nike, which had made him hundreds of millions of dollars. The partnership was marked by memorable ads and, of course, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/09\/style\/tiger-woods-nike-red-shirt.html\" title=\"\">the red Nike shirts<\/a> that Mr. Woods wore during many final rounds on Sundays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Mr. Woods announced the ending of his partnership with Nike, he said there would \u201ccertainly be another chapter.\u201d On Monday, he and his new brand sponsor, TaylorMade Golf, made clear that the next chapter would again include a red polo shirt. It will be stitched with a tiger in the center, the logo for his new brand under TaylorMade: Sun Day Red.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sun Day Red is marketed as a \u201clifestyle brand\u201d for both sports fans and non-athletes and will include apparel \u2014 even cashmere sweaters \u2014 and shoes, David Abeles, chief executive of TaylorMade, said in an interview. (Mr. Woods <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/golf\/news\/tiger-woods-new-footjoy-kicks-i-needed-something-different-more-stable\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">switched to FootJoy shoes from Nike<\/a> after his car crash in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/07\/sports\/golf\/tiger-woods-speeding-car-crash.html\" title=\"\">2021<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">How much of a role design will play in that apparel was not entirely clear, but Mr. Abeles said that \u201cthe design language of the products is completely different\u201d from products Mr. Woods wore in his last sponsorship deal. Initial promotional images showed a new logo \u2014 a tiger with 15 stripes to mark the number of major championships Mr. Woods has won; a black, long-sleeve T-shirt with the brand\u2019s name, Sun Day Red, on it; and its version of the red polo, which is on the bloodier end of the red spectrum and includes black buttons, suggesting attention to detail. (To be fair, there\u2019s only so much anyone can do with a polo.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Woods\u2019s affinity for red stems from his mother, who is from Thailand, where the color has significance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe worked through what he believes is the red that\u2019s most associated with his color palette,\u201d Mr. Abeles said. \u201cThe red color he chose is the one that is most prominent and most consistent with what he believes is the red that has inspired him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As for the space between \u201cSun\u201d and \u201cDay,\u201d Mr. Abeles said it was meant to underline the brand as more than a weekly fit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSunday red is the color that Tiger has made, you know, very famous on Sundays,\u201d he said. But Mr. Woods \u201cplays golf more than just Sunday,\u201d Mr. Abeles added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In ambition, if not design, Sun Day Red reflects a growing trend, one in which athletes see long-term potential in the increasing convergence of fashion and sports into one category known as \u201clifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To that end, many are interested less in being living advertisements for a sponsor than actual participants, demanding increased ownership and control over their own brand. In 2019, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/23\/style\/roger-federer-on-running-sneaker-deal.html\" title=\"\">Roger Federer<\/a> became both an investor in and a guest designer for On, the Swiss sneaker company, and in 2022 Tom Brady unveiled Brady, a men\u2019s wear brand developed in conjunction with Jens Grede, the mastermind behind Kim Kardashian\u2019s Skims. Serena Williams also has her own fashion line, S by Serena.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Abeles would not confirm whether Mr. Woods had equity in the brand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sun Day Red will exist as a stand-alone brand within TaylorMade, with its own headquarters and team of designers. The company has appointed Brad Blankinship, who was previously at Quiksilver, to oversee daily operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sun Day Red will first make its products available for sale online on May 1, with aims to eventually expand internationally. Polos will cost $115 to $175, and cashmere sweaters will be $250 to $350.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Woods has had an equipment deal with TaylorMade since 2017, when Nike shuttered its equipment business. The company made its pitch to Mr. Woods about an expanded relationship over the past several months, Mr. Abeles said. It included a visit to Mr. Woods\u2019s boardroom in Jupiter, Fla., where the TaylorMade team showed him a pitch video that \u201creally connected with his legacy, his greatness, his values and his future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Woods is now entering, in many ways, a new era in his professional life, nearly five years after his last major championship. Last year, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/01\/sports\/golf\/tiger-woods-pga-tour-golf.html\" title=\"\">he joined the powerful board<\/a> of the PGA Tour and has been a key player in deliberations as it negotiates its future. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Woods announced the TaylorMade deal on Monday in Southern California, where he is hosting the Genesis Invitational tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI have learned so much over the years and have a lifetime of experience adjusting my apparel and footwear to help me play better based on the way it was constructed,\u201d Mr. Woods said in a statement. \u201cThere are things that I could tell you that no one knew I was doing over the years.
