The \u201cmewing\u201d trend has risen in popularity on social media, but teachers<\/a> are now being vocal about why they don\u2019t approve of this behaviour.<\/p>\n

The method – which is named after Professor John Mew – involves flattening the tongue against the roof of your mouth to purportly lift the jawline and alleviate jaw and mouth muscle pain, according to Heathline<\/a>. However, the American Association of Orthodontists<\/a> has noted that \u201cchanging tongue placement isn\u2019t enough to magically correct misaligned teeth, reshape your jawline, and prevent the need for orthodontic treatment\u201d.<\/p>\n

Now, teachers have shared that there is another aspect related to the term \u201cmewing\u201d that has nothing to do with reshaping your jawline. In a video posted to TikTok<\/a> last month by Teresa Newman, she pointed out that when her students are \u201cmewing\u201d, they put their finger over their mouth before sliding their finger down their jawline, as a way of indicating that they don\u2019t want to answer a question.<\/p>\n

According to Newman, this gesture is students\u2019 way of signalling that they \u201cdon\u2019t care\u201d about what their peers and teachers<\/a> have to say, or that they\u2019re \u201ctoo busy being silent\u201d because they\u2019re doing the \u201cmewing\u201d technique. She went on to express why she doesn\u2019t approve of the mewing trend in her school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem that I have with mewing in the classroom<\/a> and at school is that kids are using it as a way to be disrespectful to their teachers, without their teachers understanding what it is they\u2019re doing,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a non-verbal gesture. It doesn\u2019t really signify anything specific unless you know exactly what it means and why they\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After noting that the trend allows students to \u201cavoid responding\u201d to what the teacher has to say, Newman claimed that the adult in the room then \u201clooks clueless,\u201d since they don\u2019t understand the gesture. She went on to detail how the trend negatively affects the way that children learn and treat others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a power on the part for the kid. It\u2019s a way for them to not have to take accountability for things that are being asked of them. It\u2019s a way for them to not have to participate in class,\u201d she continued. \u201cIf [the teacher] tries to question the gesture, if they try to respond in some way to stop the gesture from happening again, there\u2019s really no way to prove that the gesture in and of itself is disrespectful or harmful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newman claimed that children would find it \u201cfunny\u201d if they saw any of their peers doing the gesture to the teachers.<\/a> While students may regard the trend as \u201ca joke,\u201d she believes that they\u2019re well aware of the other meanings behind it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey absolutely understand how dismissive and disrespectful [the gesture] is to the person who\u2019s trying to engage with them, especially in a learning environment,\u201d she added. \u201cThey also understand how hurtful it can be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newman further emphasised how the trend is negatively affecting teachers<\/a>, given how much time and energy they put into making lessons for their students.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll we do is try so hard to engage our students in our lessons and get them involved in class,\u201d she added. \u201cFor something like this to come along and basically be made into this nonchalant, \u2018Oh we\u2019re just playing around, we\u2019re just having fun.\u2019 But in reality, the play and the fun is really hurtful. It\u2019s really disruptive to the learning environment as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teacher acknowledged that while she\u2019s not asking children to \u201ctake everything in their lives seriously,\u201d that doesn\u2019t change how hurtful the \u201cmewing\u201d gesture can be toward teachers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen someone walks in the classroom and really sincerely asks them genuine questions, engages them in lessons, engages them in activities, makes them think critically, and all [students] have in response is something stupid like this,\u201d she said, making the gesture. \u201cIt should piss teachers off.\u201d<\/p>\n

The video has quickly gone viral, with more than six million views. In the comments, many people went on to agree with Newman\u2019s thoughts about the \u201cmewing\u201d trend and how it is disrespectful towards teachers.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Mewing will not be on the test\u2019 would be one quip throughout the lesson I\u2019d use tbh,\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cMewing is 100 per cent disrespectful and if administrators are allowing this they are the problem,\u201d another added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings like this mewing trend are the reason why teachers are leaving their jobs,\u201d a third wrote. \u201cThe disrespect students and parents have for teachers is so sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Independent<\/em> has contacted Newman for comment. <\/p>\n

Newman isn\u2019t the first teacher to call out the \u201cmewing\u201d trend. Philip Linsday, a special education teacher, shared a recent video to TikTok<\/a> explaining how teenage students\u00a0 \u2013 specifically boys \u2013 have done the gesture when they don\u2019t want to answer his questions.<\/p>\n

He then shared his advice on\u00a0how to respond to students who do the gesture, explaining: \u201cYou can basically hit them with the, \u2018You can mew on your own time, answer my question.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
