Depending on the elasticity of your attention span, listening to Tierra Whack\u2019s 2018 debut, \u201cWhack World,\u201d might have made your brain feel like it had been tossed inside a bouncy castle the size of a jewelry box. As conceptual rap albums go, this thing seemed unprecedented \u2014 dizzy-making in scope but hyper-succinct in form, with 15 tracks lasting a mere 60 seconds each, Whack rotating through a cast of voices so omnichromatic, it was as if we had been invited to the secret puppet show inside her mind. Since then, she\u2019s dropped new songs only here and there, allowing \u201cWhack World\u201d to stand as her grand statement. Was 15 minutes of fame too much?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Thankfully, no. The Philadelphia native\u2019s relatively epic new album, \u201cWorld Wide Whack,\u201d lasts an entire 38 minutes, but give it the level of attention Whack seems to be asking for, and you won\u2019t be watching the clock. There\u2019s an untethering emotional riptide to be felt straight away on \u201cMood Swing<\/a>,\u201d with Whack rapping about her existential alienation in a tangy singsong: \u201cI cannot trust a soul, so I stay lonely.\u201d On \u201cBurning Brains<\/a>,\u201d she describes a headache triggered by overstimulation \u2014 \u201cgrass too green, sky too blue\u201d \u2014 then melts her words into a nonsensical slush that evokes Yoda cycling through all the vowel sounds. Typical romantic inertia gets her down, too. During \u201cMoovies<\/a>,\u201d she complains about a boyfriend who won\u2019t even take her to the multiplex on Friday night. \u201cI need love,\u201d she raps. \u201cIt ain\u2019t hard as you think. I want the popcorn with the big old drink.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Turns out, the more mundane the subject, the more Whack\u2019s music begins to feel weirdly sublime, like during \u201cShower Song<\/a>,\u201d surely the greatest rap cut ever written about the virtues of daily hygiene. \u201cI sound great when I\u2019m singing in the shower,\u201d Whack announces over an electro-boogie bass line that refuses to spin down the drain. \u201cSoap and water give me powers.\u201d It\u2019s as simple and playful as a children\u2019s song, but it also speaks to that mysterious surge in confidence we manage to summon in routine states of naked vulnerability \u2014 a confidence that not only allows us to sing out loud but to love what we hear.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And while \u201cShower Song\u201d stands tall on its own, its placement deep in the track list gives \u201cWorld Wide Whack\u201d its late-arriving narrative arc. She just spent the first two acts mulling disappointments in her romantic partners and her neurochemistry, but now Whack is feeling refreshed and alert, ready to rap about life and death. First comes \u201cInvitation<\/a>,\u201d a zesty sequence of brags that proves precision and goofballing aren\u2019t mutually exclusive modes; then \u201cSnake Eyes<\/a>,\u201d a song where the alternating affirmation ad-libs (\u201cMmmm,\u201d \u201cMmmm\u201d) sound like two cows playing on a seesaw.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After that, Whack makes the surprising pivot into \u201cTwo Night<\/a>,\u201d a trap-tinted ballad about how \u201cdeath is real\u201d and \u201clife is fake\u201d; and finally, \u201c27 Club<\/a>,\u201d a lullaby about suicide so devastating, you\u2019ll wonder whether you\u2019re hearing it clearly. And maybe you aren\u2019t. More than most, Whack knows that imagination is our most powerful shield against the cruelty of existence. Here, she would also like to remind us that it isn\u2019t invincible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
