That is the question,\u201d mocks an actor in Suzan-Lori Parks\u2019s leaden, overworked \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/publictheater.org\/productions\/season\/2324\/sally--tom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sally &amp; Tom<\/a>.\u201d While rehearsing a play within the play, she concedes that the lines in question are \u201cfinger-waggy\u201d but realizes that axing them might cause their mouthpiece to quit the show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The question of trimming \u2014 and \u201csignificantly reduced\u201d word counts \u2014 is taken up several more times in \u201cSally &amp; Tom,\u201d which made its world premiere at Minneapolis\u2019s Guthrie Theater in 2022 and opened Tuesday off-Broadway at the Public Theater.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">There are two storylines in Parks\u2019s play. One takes place in 1790 and centers on the relationship between Thomas Jefferson (a reedy-voiced Gabriel Ebert) and Sally Hemings (Sheria Irving), the enslaved woman who bore him at least six children. Jefferson\u2019s Monticello plantation is halfheartedly suggested by set designer Riccardo Hern\u00e1ndez with a free-standing door, military-issue columns and a ponderous curtain. Etched on a black wall spackled with white paint are the words \u201cE PLURIBUS UNUM\u201d: out of many, one. This play-within-a-play is titled \u201cThe Pursuit of Happiness\u201d and is performed by a downtown theater troupe called the Good Company, which has \u201ca track record of doing angry political plays that nobody comes to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The other storyline begins as the actors \u2014 now in sweats rather than starchy 18th-century costumes (designed by Rodrigo Mu\u00f1oz) \u2014 are in the throes of rehearsing \u201cPursuit.\u201d Mere days away from opening night, the playwright, Luce (Irving), and her director and romantic partner, Mike (Ebert), are still finessing lines and figuring out how to please their producer, who holds the purse strings, without sacrificing their artistic vision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Make that visions: \u201cThe Pursuit of Happiness\u201d doesn\u2019t admit of a single unifying interpretation. It\u2019s the seditious inverse of \u201ce pluribus unum.\u201d Its creators can\u2019t seem to decide: Did Jefferson really love Hemings, or was he a sexual predator? Was he \u201ckinder\u201d than other enslavers of his time? Is there evidence to support the claim, made by a moneybags producer, that he had Asperger\u2019s? At least two actors think \u201cPursuit\u201d is a \u201cBlack play,\u201d but Scout (an excitable Sun Mee Chomet), a Korean company member, has doubts. In a vulnerable moment, she ventilates a question that has been simmering at the back of her mind for weeks: \u201cHow much skin do I actually have in this game?\u201d And, referring to colorblind casting, she asks: \u201cShould only the people who were, or are, the people, play the people?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Sincere as they are, the thoughts are also symptomatic of \u201cSally &amp; Tom\u2019s\u2019\u201d eagerness to spoon-feed its audience pre-masticated ideas. Scenes in the self-consciously stylized \u201cPursuit\u201d fall flat for a different reason: The historical personages are less directed than posed. One righteous moan-a-logue by James Hemings (Alano Miller), Jefferson\u2019s enslaved chef and valet and Sally\u2019s brother, takes up a full page of the script and touches on Thomas Paine\u2019s \u201cThe Rights of Man,\u201d the philosophers\u2019 stone and \u201cbreeding farms\u201d near Monticello \u2014 and ends by predicting a \u201creckoning\u201d: \u201cThe stars that articulate what you call your birthright will have all gone out, leaving you in a darkness that is my color and the song in the air will sing my name!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Speaking for the skeptics in the audience, Luce, during rehearsals, dismisses the declamation as a \u201cmanufactured moment.\u201d \u201cTJ would never ever let James go on and on like that,\u201d she remarks to the actor playing James before amputating the oration. If \u201cPursuit\u201d often comes across as a warmed-over Wiki-play \u2014 with actors dutifully telling us that Jefferson owned enslaved people, rewrote the Bible, renovated homes \u2014 then \u201cSally &amp; Tom,\u201d directed by Steve Broadnax III, often seems like a note from the playwright you\u2019d find in the Playbill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Parks has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Vg_OJdttvQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> described herself<\/a> as a \u201cmyth head\u201d who likes to color outside of history\u2019s lines; paradoxically, the most variegated moments in her latest effort are not the historically inspired ones or the ones thinly disguised as essays, but the processual ones evoking the hurly-burly of dress rehearsals. Changing costumes, applying makeup, practicing swings and punches, the actors make us care about their unplanned pregnancy, their run-in with cops, their terror of being off-book, their prospects of getting cast in an indie film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Yet exposition turns up in the present-day scenes, too. Admiring the program for their play, Maggie (Kristolyn Lloyd) gushes to a fellow actor: \u201cThe first one we haven\u2019t had to print ourselves, thanks to Teddy. Low-budget-no-budget theater never looked so good.\u201d Pseudo-profundities like \u201cWhat are any of us at the end of the day but people who make choices?\u201d and \u201cI stand at the intersection of the horrible, and the splendid and the dizzy-making contradiction that is all of us\u201d are also wafted across the footlights.
