But the company stopped selling talc-based items in 2020, and two years later announced plans to cease sales of the product worldwide.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/johnson-johnson-announces-plan-by-its-subsidiary-llt-management-llc-to-resolve-all-current-and-future-ovarian-cancer-talc-claims-through-a-consensual-prepackaged-reorganization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0the proposal would settle 99.75% of the pending talc lawsuits in the U.S. The legal actions not covered by the proposal relate to mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the lungs and other organs. The company said it would address those suits outside the proposed settlement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Plan is the culmination of our consensual resolution strategy that we announced last October,&#8221; Erik Haas, worldwide vice president of litigation for J&amp;J, said in a statement Wednesday. &#8220;Since then, the Company has worked with counsel representing the overwhelming majority of talc claimants to bring this litigation to a close, which we expect to do through this plan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson &amp; Johnson made its settlement offer as part of a bankruptcy reorganization plan for a subsidiary, \u00a0LLT Management, that J&amp;J said would give\u00a0ovarian claimants three months to vote for or against the plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys for the plaintiffs dismissed the settlement offer, saying &#8220;would cheat victims legitimately harmed by talc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe any bankruptcy based on this solicitation and vote will be found fraudulent and filed in bad faith under the Bankruptcy Code,&#8221; Andy Birchfield, head of the Mass Torts Section at the Beasley Allen Law Firm, said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch. &#8220;On behalf of our clients who deserve better, we are blowing the whistle on this cynical legal tactic and will resist it at every turn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n<p><h3 class=\"component__title\">More from CBS News<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p><!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/search\/author\/megan-cerullo\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Megan Cerullo<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Megan Cerullo is a New York-based reporter for CBS MoneyWatch covering small business, workplace, health care, consumer spending and personal finance topics.
