Trump made the front page of The New York Times after assaulting a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1980\/06\/06\/archives\/developer-scraps-bonwit-sculptures-builder-orders-bonwit-art-deco.html\" title=\"\">pair of scantily clad women at a Fifth Avenue department store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That the women were made of stone and were attached to the building of Bonwit Teller, in the process of being razed and replaced by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/25\/us\/politics\/trump-1980s-manhattan.html\" title=\"\">Trump Tower<\/a>, was of little comfort to the trustees at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which had been promised these Art Deco bas-relief beauties \u2014 long hovering over pedestrians, now shattered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The sculptures\u2019 significance was allegorical as well as architectural: Department stores, though erected mostly by men, have always been feminine domains. \u201cThe Ladies\u2019 Paradise\u201d is the English title of \u00c9mile Zola\u2019s 1883 novel, set at a store <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/about.jstor.org\/blog\/shopping-paradise-emile-zola-and-the-worlds-first-department-store\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">modeled after<\/a> Le Bon March\u00e9, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lebonmarche.com\/en\/store\/culture\/heritage-lebonmarche\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">still standing<\/a> in Paris despite the ravages of e-commerce. Patricia Highsmith framed her 1952 lesbian romance \u201cThe Price of Salt\u201d at the fictional Frankenberg\u2019s, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/astra-mag.com\/articles\/department-store-as-dreamscape\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">based on Bloomingdale\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now Julie Satow has written a group biography of the department-store doyennes who ran the show \u2014 and these places in their heyday <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/27\/style\/department-stores.html\" title=\"\">really were a form of theater<\/a> \u2014 for the male founders and owners whose names adorned the facades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was clever to convene these three queens from different periods, along with shorter sketches of figures farther from Fifth Avenue, like the Black entrepreneur Maggie Walker, who in 1905 opened the St. Luke Emporium for her community in segregated Richmond, Va.; and Beatrice Fox Auerbach of G. Fox in Hartford, Conn., the inspiration for the savvy scion Rachel Menken of Menken\u2019s on \u201cMad Men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Each might not have sustained a biography of her own, though Odlum did write a dissembling memoir, \u201cA Woman\u2019s Place,\u201d<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>long out of print, from which Satow draws. Considered in aggregate, they are a force. You can imagine them milling around the great perfume counter in the sky. After \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/18\/theater\/suffs-review-broadway-shaina-taub.html\" title=\"\">Suffs<\/a>,\u201d maybe \u201cSpritzes\u201d?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Stutz, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/04\/09\/business\/geraldine-stutz-dies-at-80-headed-bendel-for-29-years.html\" title=\"\">died in 2005<\/a>, is still remembered by a certain cadre of Manhattan aristocracy, and her portrayal is fleshed out by interviews conducted by the author, who has contributed to The Times (including the Styles section, where I used to work) and previously wrote a book about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/31\/books\/review\/julie-satow-the-plaza-hotel-tina-brown.html\" title=\"\">the Plaza hotel.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not that \u201cfleshed out\u201d is a phrase readily applied to Stutz, who these days would have almost certainly been canceled for fat-shaming; under her oversight, Bendel\u2019s only stocked up to the equivalent of a contemporary size 6. But she also revolutionized retail with a winding \u201cstreet of shops\u201d that opened inside the store in 1959 (\u201cStreet of Flops,\u201d sneered the then-president of Bergdorf Goodman after he toured it). At a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1982\/01\/29\/business\/bendel-s-tryout-for-designers.html\" title=\"\">weekly open call<\/a> known as the Friday Morning Lineup, young artisans vied for a coveted spot in her inventory as if trying to get into a nightclub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Shaver had arrived in New York long before, from Arkansas by way of Chicago, on a lark with her sister, who would design popular and weird <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/asset\/doll-little-shaver-pink-and-green-alexander-doll-company-inc\/xQFCKJqHPoXdVQ?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Little Shaver dolls<\/a> featured in Lord &amp; Taylor\u2019s Christmas windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hired by the store\u2019s president, a third cousin of her mother\u2019s, Dorothy worked her way up through the ranks (eventually getting his job) and changed its practices: opening the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1947\/11\/26\/archives\/styles-at-resorts-going-feminine-little-boy-look-disappears-in.html\" title=\"\">Bird Cage<\/a>, a famous restaurant serving tea sandwiches; introducing the kind of personal shopping refined to a high art by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/05\/books\/review\/ill-drink-to-that-by-betty-halbreich-with-rebecca-paley.html\" title=\"\">Betty Halbreich at Bergdorf<\/a>; promoting American designers in a French-obsessed era; and, in general, establishing \u201cthat department stores could rival galleries, and even museums, as cultural arbiters,\u201d Satow writes. Abashed to be granddaughter to a Confederate who joined the Ku Klux Klan, Shaver also used her power to promote racial equality, up to a point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Debbie Downer of the trio is Odlum, devastated after her husband, a Wall Street tycoon who\u2019d bought Bonwit, left her for a manicurist at Saks (and later aviator). A salon colleague asserted in his own memoir that the scandal was the basis for the Clare Boothe Luce play \u201cThe Women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Odlum supervised innovations including moving hats (\u201charmless whimsies,\u201d a.k.a. impulse purchases) from an upper floor to prominence, a club for men to ogle lingerie models while their wives shopped, and a best-selling novel by the head of advertising that romanticized the life of an assistant buyer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cA big store adds such a lot of glitter and fun to the prosy business of everyday living,\u201d read one line. This was certainly true when Salvador Dal\u00ed was commissioned to do displays, and crashed a bathtub filled with dirty water through Bonwit\u2019s window in a fit of artistic pique.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Odlum married three more times but remained bitter, blaming her workload for trouble rearing her children. \u201cWhen my grandmother died,\u2019\u2019 a grandson tells Satow, \u201cI remember my father saying something along the lines of, \u2018Well, the old witch is finally dead.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There is in fact something Oz-like about the Technicolor world of the department store, with its pneumatic tubes that swooshed cash and sales slips up to the ceiling; the display director who took one mannequin, Cynthia, everywhere, including El Morocco; the limitless variety of goods ranging even, at one store in Oklahoma City, to babies for adoption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If the suburban mall did this institution damage, the 24-7 grand bazaar of the internet made it a ghost town.
