Click here.<\/a><\/footer>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Health officials in Virginia are investigating a surge of brutal gastrointestinal illnesses reported in children who were at a popular lake over Memorial Day weekend, with a number of them ending up in a hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) says that some people who were in the water at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/southeast\/virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lake Anna<\/a> have been diagnosed with\u00a0Escherichia coli\u00a0(E. coli) infections, which cause stomach cramps and diarrhea. And now she is, like, fighting for her life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Inglett said her daughter has been diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a rare but serious disease that affects the kidneys and blood clotting functions of infected people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She\u2019s in kidney failure. I wouldn\u2019t even let my dogs swim in that lake. There is definitely something going on. It\u2019s not safe,&#8221; Inglett told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>The VDH said in a press release last week that clinical evaluation and treatment of patients is ongoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agency said that it is investigating all potential causes of illness, including lake water and food exposures. Lake Anna is one of the largest freshwater inland reservoirs in Virginia, covering an area of 13,000 acres and is located 72 miles south of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/washington-dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/e-coli-strain-linked-leafy-greens-associated-outbreaks-research-led-cdc-doctor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>E. It\u2019s not safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <span class=\"quote-author\">\u2014 Judy Inglett<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another parent, Nate Hiner, told Fox 10 News that his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/parenting\/family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8-year-old twins<\/a> were sent to Children\u2019s National Hospital. His daughter received blood and platelet transfusions.<\/p>\n<p>Hiner also said he believes the symptoms stem from their Memorial Day weekend lake visit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s terrifying to just go from having a fun day at the lake to potentially needing dialysis in an 8-year-old child.
