Blue emergency strobe lights. The orange glow of a would-be seductress\u2019s cigarette. A murder detective\u2019s fifth cup of brown-bile coffee. And, naturally, the rubber medical gloves as white as an overnight Baltimore snow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">That palette carefully changes,<b> <\/b>though, in the new<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3OcmpYW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cHomicide: The Graphic Novel, Part One,\u201d<\/a> which becomes a mostly monochromatic noir \u2014 the scenes of Charm City\u2019s rough corners and tough interrogation rooms often rendered in shades of gray, punctuated by the occasional eye-pop tint of an orange prisoner jumpsuit, the pale yellow of crime-scene police tape or the liquid crimson of a fresh victim\u2019s blood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The illustrated book from French graphic novelist Philippe Squarzoni, published this week \u2014 as adapted from the original in consultation with Simon \u2014 is as beautifully stark as the hard-boiled Hollywood adaptations of another former Baltimore Sun reporter, legendary noir author <a href=\"https:\/\/dcwritershomes.wdchumanities.org\/james-m-cain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James M. Cain<\/a>. And Simon approves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cSure, who doesn\u2019t like noir?\u201d Simon says with an up beat by phone last month. He\u2019s on the Acela train en route to New York, where he plans to picket the next day outside HBO on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2023\/05\/06\/ai-writers-strike\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behalf of his fellow screenwriters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Comics aren\u2019t necessarily his thing. He did read military comic books as a kid, and he\u2019s a fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2020\/11\/27\/doonesbury-garry-trudeau-anniversary\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDoonesbury\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/comics\/2022\/01\/28\/art-spiegelman-maus-ban-tennessee-school\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMaus.\u201d<\/a> He\u2019s also aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/comichub.com\/products\/six-complete-graphic-novel-mature-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graphic novels by George Pelecanos<\/a>, who has worked on multiple much-lauded HBO shows with Simon, including \u201cThe Wire,\u201d \u201cTreme\u201d and the 2022 limited series they co-created, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=72fOU_tEIHM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWe Own This City.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Yet the \u201cHomicide\u201d graphic adaptation, which is scheduled to publish its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Homicide-Graphic-Novel-Part-Two\/dp\/1250624630\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3H14FAOHD8UUD&amp;keywords=homicide+part+two+graphic+novel&amp;qid=1690225923&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=homicide+part+two+graphic+novel%2Cstripbooks%2C77&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second part in December<\/a>, is prompting Simon to reflect on his original book, published in 1991, and on the year he spent embedded with Baltimore homicide detectives 35 years ago. So much about American police work is different since 1988: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/baltimore\/news\/baltimore-homicide-clearance-rate-42-percent-crime-without-punishment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the \u201cmurder clearance\u201d rate<\/a> (how many homicides are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/04\/29\/1172775448\/people-murder-unsolved-killings-record-high\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solved and \u201ccleared\u201d<\/a>) has dipped precipitously, for instance, and the use of forensic science has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.umich.edu\/special\/exoneration\/Pages\/Exoneration-by-Year.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of exonerations by DNA<\/a> since 1989.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Simon was a young crime reporter for the Sun in the mid-\u201980s when, at Christmastime, he dropped off a bottle of cheer for the homicide detectives. It was a fairly slow night, so he drank with them as they poured shots. As Simon recalls, a detective named Bill Lansey then said: \u201cIf somebody could get up here and just follow all the s&#8212; that happens, they would have a book.\u201d Lansey wasn\u2019t even looking at the reporter, but Simon recollects: \u201cIt stayed in my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Cut to a couple of years later, and Simon is \u201cfeeling a little bit mad\u201d over labor unrest at the Sun. Hungry for a change, he writes a letter to the police commissioner, asking for permission to go into the Baltimore Police Department\u2019s homicide unit as an observer for a year, to chronicle the lives and actions of several dozen detectives. \u201cIncredibly,\u201d Simon recalls, \u201che said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Soon, Simon is covering the grind of this life. He illuminates the joking detective who will deliver the deadpan while standing over a dead man. There\u2019s the tough rookie who will exceed expectations. Shift commanders, squad supervisors, higher-ups: Amid the body count, detectives must survive the bureaucracy. And always, there is the big office board that lists open and cleared cases in red and black ink, respectively.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The young reporter peels back the layers of the \u201cgraceless, nocturnal ballet\u201d at headquarters, he writes,<b> <\/b>as witnesses glide \u201cpast one another beneath the washed-out glare of tube lighting, each flanked by a tired, impassive detective cradling black coffee and enough blank statement forms to record the next round of half-truths.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">And often, Simon demystifies the work that Hollywood has long shellacked with glamour. He portrays the kind of job where you sit behind a metal desk in a poorly ventilated \u201csteel-frame death trap,\u201d eating cheap pizza and Italian cold cuts as \u201cHawaii Five-O\u201d reruns blare in the background. After a dispatcher calls, you will grab your gun, notepad, flashlight and rubber gloves, climb into an unmarked Chevrolet Cavalier and drive to where \u201cin all probability, a uniformed police officer will be standing over a cooling human body.\u201d Later, you will \u201cthrow as much street-corner psychology as you can at the people who found the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Yet scarred neighborhoods tend to move on from each murder. Simon calls West Baltimore the \u201chome of the misdemeanor homicide.\u201d And he writes that, in a city \u201cwith 240 murders a year, there will always be another body.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Reviews called the 1991 book<b> <\/b>\u201cone of the most engrossing police procedural mystery books\u201d and a \u201cmasterpiece\u201d that captures \u201cthe poetry of the meanest streets.\u201d And in the \u201cante mortem\u201d to the book, novelist and screenwriter Richard Price (\u201cClockers\u201d) writes that \u201cthrough the steadfastness of Simon\u2019s presence <i>Homicide <\/i>offers us the patterns hidden within the chaos. Baltimore, in fact, is Chaos Theory incarnate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Flash-forward to a French comic artist visiting the United States: Squarzoni knew of Simon\u2019s later screen work, such as \u201cThe Wire\u201d and \u201cGeneration Kill,\u201d when he happened to spot \u201cHomicide\u201d in a Portland bookstore. He cracked open the cover and had<b> <\/b>a creative epiphany.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cReading the book \u2014 and that\u2019s the only time it\u2019s ever happened to me \u2014 I could see the comics pages appear in my mind,\u201d the Lyon-based Squarzoni says via email, as translated by his American editor, Mark Siegel. \u201cI could sense the graphic novel it wanted to be. Intuitively, I knew the look and the page compositions it would call for.\u201d He contacted his editor and said: \u201cThis is my next book.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Eventually, Squarzoni managed to get a letter into Simon\u2019s hands to explain his vision. \u201cHe gave his blessing, with the only condition being that I faithfully follow the chronology and the facts as they unfolded in that year, 1988,\u201d the artist writes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Simon and Squarzoni communicated virtually during the graphic novel\u2019s creation. (They\u2019ve never met in person.) \u201cHe had more questions from a visual nature of things: \u2018What kind of handguns do they carry? Where do they wear the holsters?\u2019\u201d Simon says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The multivolume adaptation was first published in France. Simon sent French-language editions to dozens of surviving detectives.
