{"id":2683,"date":"2024-10-29T15:46:12","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T15:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/life-style\/how-to-look-after-your-balance-and-avoid-falls-later-in-life\/"},"modified":"2024-10-29T15:46:12","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T15:46:12","slug":"how-to-look-after-your-balance-and-avoid-falls-later-in-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/life-style\/how-to-look-after-your-balance-and-avoid-falls-later-in-life\/","title":{"rendered":"How to look after your balance and avoid falls later in life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"main\">\n<div class=\"hydrate-root\" data-component=\"Newsletter\" data-loading=\"lazy\" data-theme-name=\"base\">\n<div class=\"sc-1230l3a-0 qAogd newsletter-component sc-1ge0fwe-0 eFJlzZ\" data-newsletter-key=\"receiveIndyWellness\">\n<div class=\"sc-1ykbqwm-0 ffESMm sc-1ykbqwm-1 kVMOFF\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-tuvb20-0 gTNegf\">\n<div class=\"sc-1gqjrv9-3 cNVcNh sc-1gqjrv9-8 SNvDe\">\n<p><h3 data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"sc-1gqjrv9-4 fgTCLc\">Sign up to our free Living Well email for advice on living a happier, healthier and longer life<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"sc-1gqjrv9-5 sc-1gqjrv9-6 UFssF kEXQjc\">Live your life healthier and happier with our free weekly Living Well newsletter<\/h3>\n<h3 data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"sc-1gqjrv9-5 UFssF\">Live your life healthier and happier with our free weekly Living Well newsletter<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Having good balance helps prevent falls and makes our daily activities easier to perform, but it is often something we forget about when outlining our fitness goals.<\/p>\n<p>Improving balance also plays a crucial role in maintaining mobility and independence later in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/balance\">Balance<\/a> is essential for moving around, and if your balance worsens, you\u2019ll be less mobile and more likely to become sedentary or chair-bound,\u201d says Tim Allardyce, physiotherapist and osteopath at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/surreyphysio.co.uk\">Surrey Physio<\/a>. \u201cImproving balance will help improve muscle strength, posture and mobility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we maintain good balance, independence is maintained, and the likelihood of becoming socially isolated reduces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, why do we struggle more with balance as we age, and what can we do to improve it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do people struggle with balance more later in life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/people\">People<\/a> struggle with balance later in life for many reasons, due to a gradual deterioration in our physical health,\u201d explains Allardyce. \u201cFor every decade over the age of 30, we lose about 3-5% muscle strength on average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our muscles weaken, we have greater difficulty with mobility and balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poor eyesight can also hinder our balance abilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur eyesight worsens with age, and with poor eyesight comes worsening balance, as we rely on our eyes to provide awareness of where our body is in space,\u201d notes Allardyce.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, many seniors experience side effects from taking medication such as anti-depressants, blood pressure medications and muscle relaxants, which makes them more unsteady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany medications have side effects, and 30% of people over the age of 75 take five or more medications,\u201d highlights Allardyce. \u201cMany cause drowsiness, dizziness, and feeling unsteady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith worsening balance comes higher prevalence of falls,\u201d forewarns Allardyce. \u201cAs we age, our bones weaken too, so a fall can be a severe problem, sometimes fatal if a bad fracture occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are a few simple ways to help improve balance later in life\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Individual balance exercises<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Samantha Thom, an independent physiotherapist working with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyn.co.uk\/\">KYN<\/a> Bickley care home says that repeating the following exercises on a regular basis, ten times each, will naturally help improve your balance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Sit to stand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit in your regular chair, ensure your feet are flat on the floor and brought back towards the chair,\u201d instructs Thom. \u201cLean forward slightly and stand up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHold onto your walking aid if needed and stand up straight and ensure the back of your legs are touching the chair, slowly lower yourself back into it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf required, you can use your hands on the arms of the chair to help control this movement, but try to use them as little as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Toe raises<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DBOXiRbo2iG\/embed\/captioned\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowtransparency=\"true\" class=\"sc-1qbn810-1 dFbQfS\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStand tall, hold a support and raise your toes \u2013 taking your weight on your heels,\u201d coaches Thom. \u201cDon\u2019t stick your bottom out. Hold for three seconds, then lower with control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. One leg stand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStand close to your support and hold it with one or two hands as needed,\u201d says Thom. \u201cBalance on one leg, keeping the support knee soft and your posture upright.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHold the position for five to 10 seconds. Repeat this on the other leg. Try to reduce the amount you use your hands as you practice this exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo for regular walks on varied terrains and wear supportive shoes,\u201d suggests Rowan Clift, training specialist at AI-based fitness and lifestyle coaching app <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/esimedia_t58ukgmjkf95_theindependent?q=http%3A%2F%2Fgo.redirectingat.com%2F%3Fid%3D44681X1458326%26url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.freeletics.com%252Fen%252F%26sref%3D%2Flife-style%2Fhealth-and-families%2Fbalance-pilates-people-yoga-falls-b2637580.html&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Flife-style%2Fhealth-and-families%2Fbalance-pilates-people-yoga-falls-b2637580.html&amp;article_id=2637580&amp;author=Camilla+Foster&amp;tag=PA+Ready%2CBalance%2CPilates%2CPeople%2CYoga%2CFalls%2CStrength+Training&amp;section=Health+%26+Families&amp;category=&amp;sub_category=&amp;updated_time=2024-10-29T15%3A46%3A12.000Z&amp;utm_campaign=news-body&amp;utm_term=B-1&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_medium=&amp;ref=&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;fbclid=&amp;gclid=\">Freeletics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Allardyce recommends getting at least 10 to 20 minutes of fresh air everyday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/pilates\">Pilates<\/a> or yoga<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/yoga\">Yoga<\/a> can help deepen your meditation practice, improve your flexibility, and help with balance,\u201d explains Thom. \u201cPilates is another great choice for balance \u2013 it\u2019s especially beneficial if you\u2019re recovering after injury, improving posture, and for core strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chair exercises<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA highly effective and simple exercise is the chair exercise, which involves sitting and standing from a chair without using your hands,\u201d says Clift. \u201cAdditionally, performing leg lifts while seated can help build strength and stability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese exercises are great for enhancing balance and can easily be incorporated into a daily routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Light strength training<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrength training can protect your joints from injury and contribute to better balance,\u201d says Thom. \u201cContact a physiotherapist or your local gym for advice on appropriate exercises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Go for regular eye checks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoutine eye exams can address vision issues, which can have a huge effect on balance and stability.
