He is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/20\/arts\/music\/asap-rocky-arrested.html\" title=\"\">charged<\/a> with two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rocky, 36, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, earned fame following the 2011 release of the single \u201cPeso,\u201d and his debut mixtape, \u201cLive. Love.\u201d The New York-based artist was part of the influential rap collective ASAP Mob.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He is also the longtime partner of Rihanna, the famed singer, actress and businesswoman. The status of their relationship has already been a point of legal parsing in the pretrial hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The trial is expected to last about three weeks. If convicted, Rocky faces a maximum of up to 24 years in prison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is what to know about the trial.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2d9f768d\">What exactly is the trial about?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At a pretrial hearing in November 2023, ASAP Relli, born Terell Ephron, testified that he and Rocky were high school friends who once belonged to the same rap collective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Their relationship frayed amid Rocky\u2019s rise to fame. Relli and Rocky agreed to meet on the evening of Nov. 6, 2021, to clear their differences, Relli testified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"> Relli claimed Rocky arrived with two men at a parking garage near the W Hotel in Hollywood. Prosecutors allege that he and Rocky briefly argued and Rocky pulled a gun from his waistband and later fired at Relli, grazing his knuckles, a claim they argue is supported by surveillance video showing Rocky holding a gun before the shooting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2022, Rocky was arrested at a Los Angeles airport as he and Rihanna returned from a trip to Barbados. He pleaded not guilty and was released on bond.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4fbcfded\">How has ASAP Rocky responded?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, Rocky turned down a plea offer of a six-month jail term with a seven-year suspended sentence and three years of probation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His lawyer, Joe Tacopina, has argued that the weapon used was a \u201cprop gun\u201d incapable of firing real ammunition.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1e7e6bba\">Has Rocky\u2019s busy schedule affected the trial?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rocky has several notable projects on the horizon. He is scheduled to be one of the headliners of the Los Angeles stop of the Rolling Loud festival in March, and was announced as one of the celebrity chairs for the Met Gala, to be held in May. He was also cast to star alongside Denzel Washington in a Spike Lee-directed movie slated to open in summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The trial was originally to begin in November, but was postponed to allow Rocky to host the Rolling Loud music festival, which was in Thailand.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-104d621f\">Will Rihanna make a courtroom appearance?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last week, the judge, Mark S. Arnold, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/music\/a\/cmplxtara-mahadevan\/asap-rocky-trial-judge-asks-about-rihanna-marital-status\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">asked<\/a> Tacopina how he should refer to Rihanna in relation to Rocky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShe\u2019s his common-law wife, your Honor,\u201d Tacopina responded, adding she could be referred to as his wife. The prosecution argued against that term if they were not legally married.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an October hearing, Arnold asked if Rihanna would attend the trial. \u201cShe\u2019s welcome to be here whenever she wants I\u2019d just like to know,\u201d Arnold said, according to The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019s very protective of Rihanna and doesn\u2019t want her anywhere near this proceeding,\u201d Tacopina responded on behalf of his client. \u201cBut that\u2019s a family decision they\u2019ll make.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2cb785cf\">Will Rocky\u2019s legal history come up in this trial?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rocky was a central figure in a 2019 incident that caught international attention, when he and two members of his entourage said they acted in self-defense when they punched and kicked a 19-year-old man in Stockholm.
