As well as providing relief for businesses, the cut will help thousands of people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/interest-rates-uk-bank-of-england-boe-mortgages-latest-news-b2693227.html\" title=\"Interest rates live: Bank of England cuts UK interest rates in boost for mortgage holders\">mortgages<\/a> who will see their monthly payments fall. It projects that GDP fell 0.1 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2024 and will rise by just 0.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Johnson, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), called the update a \u201cpretty pessimistic forecast\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOffice of Budget Responsibility (OBR) is generally much more optimistic than the Bank, but if it moves in a similar direction that will spell trouble for the chancellor,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In his assessment, Bank governor Andrew Bailey warned that US trade tariffs, even if not imposed directly on the UK, could hit growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there were to be tariffs that contributed to a fragmentation of the world economy, that would be negative for growth for the world economy. I hope that doesn\u2019t happen, but that could happen,\u201d Mr Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p>It follows Ms Reeves\u2019s major speech last week when she doubled down on her economic growth agenda in a bid to relaunch her economic plan with proposals to unleash massive building projects including a new runway at Heathrow Airport.<\/p>\n<p>Downing Street backed the chancellor, repeating a pledge that she will stay in the role for the whole of this parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said households would have \u201cmore money in their pockets\u201d as he welcomed the rate cut \u2013 the third drop in interest rates since July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good news because for many people watching this it means they will have more money in their pockets,\u201d he said. \u201cWages are going up higher than inflation, so again people feel better off. The minimum wage has gone up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe are absolutely determined we are going to grow the economy, and I don\u2019t mean a line on a graph, I mean people feeling better off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But shadow chancellor Mel Stride said that while the cut in interest rates \u201cwill be welcome news\u201d for families and businesses he warned the Bank of England\u2019s weaker-than-expected growth predictions showed \u201cconfidence is falling and Labour\u2019s Budget is fuelling inflation\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Labour\u2019s \u201cdisastrous Budget is likely to mean fewer rate cuts this year than previously anticipated\u201d, he added. <\/p>\n<p>Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper said the new growth forecast should be a \u201cwake-up call for the chancellor\u201d and called on her to scrap her \u201cmisguided national insurance hike\u201d on employers and drop her refusal to \u201cnegotiate a bespoke UK-EU Customs Union\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Anna Leach, chief economist of the Institute of Directors, urged Ms Reeves to reconsider \u201cadditional burdens\u201d placed on businesses last year, in particular \u201cpernicious tax changes affecting family firms, farms and non-doms\u201d and employment regulations. <\/p>\n<p>Budget measures have \u201csignificantly undermined\u201d business momentum \u201cand will affect levels of private investment for years to come\u201d, she said, and the forecasts presented a \u201cworrying outlook for the UK\u201d in which \u201cstagflation risks remain on the table\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank\u2019s rate setting Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted by 7 to 2 to bring rates down. Lower borrowing costs will ease pressures on households, helping families with their weekly budgets and leaving them with more to spend. And it will make it more affordable for businesses to invest and grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alpesh Paleja, deputy chief economist, CBI, said the move \u201creinforces our view of a gradual loosening in monetary policy over this year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But he warned: \u201cThe Monetary Policy Committee are increasingly having to balance conflicting objectives. The CBI\u2019s surveys show that business growth and hiring expectations have weakened. But inflation expectations are picking up, exacerbated by the rise in employment costs arising from October\u2019s Budget.
