The Washington Post\u2019s opinion editor, David Shipley, is exiting as the newspaper\u2019s owner, Jeff Bezos, said the section\u2019s focus would narrow to defend \u201cpersonal liberties and free markets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am of America and for America, and proud to be so,\u201d Mr. Bezos said. \u201cOur country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America\u2019s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical \u2014 it minimizes coercion \u2014 and practical; it drives creativity, invention and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his note, Mr. Bezos said that he asked Mr. Shipley whether he wanted to stay at The Post, and Mr. Shipley declined.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suggested to him that if the answer wasn\u2019t \u2018hell yes,\u2019 then it had to be \u2018no,\u2019” Mr. Bezos wrote.<\/p>\n

In a note to opinion staff members, Mr. Shipley said that he decided to step down \u201cafter reflection on how I can best move forward in the profession I love.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
