Lutnick told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/lutnick-trumps-policies-worth-it-recession\/\">CBS News<\/a> when asked whether the tariffs would be worth it if they lead to a recession. &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/commerce-tariffs-recession-lutnick-b2713399.html\">It&#8217;s worth it<\/a>!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know about a recession \u2014 and what experts say you can do to prepare:<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-482ou5-2 lafNeh sc-482ou5-3 fdIcNP image align-center\">\n<figure class=\"sc-1cbdeug-0 lkeWpK\">\n<div class=\"sc-482ou5-0 grBzPF\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/03\/05\/7\/08\/Trump-Speech-atklzt0y.jpeg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/03\/05\/7\/08\/Trump-Speech-atklzt0y.jpeg?quality=75&amp;width=320&amp;auto=webp 320w, https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/03\/05\/7\/08\/Trump-Speech-atklzt0y.jpeg?quality=75&amp;width=640&amp;auto=webp 640w\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs will be worth it, even if they lead to a recession\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 bNNNXy\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"sc-1cbdeug-1 sc-1cbdeug-3 fWLHSZ hfwDDP\">Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs will be worth it, even if they lead to a recession<span class=\"sc-1cbdeug-7 eUTWtv\"> <!-- -->(<!-- -->AP<!-- -->)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2><strong>What is a recession?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Economists use the term \u201crecession\u201d to describe a period of decline in economic activity, explains the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/fandd\/issues\/Series\/Back-to-Basics\/Recession\">International Monetary Fund<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>One popular definition of a recession is at least two quarters of negative real gross domestic product, or GDP, which is the total value of goods and services in a country.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/research\/business-cycle-dating\/business-cycle-dating-procedure-frequently-asked-questions\">National Bureau of Economic Research<\/a>, a non-profit that tracks U.S. business cycles, defines a recession as \u201ca significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months.\u201d For the bureau to ultimately call a recession, the economic downturn has to be significant, spread across sectors and not limited to a short period of time.<\/p>\n<p>The bureau uses six key indicators to determine if there\u2019s a recession. These factors include personal consumption, personal income, and manufacturing and trade sales, among others. <\/p>\n<p>A downturn in gross national product (the total value of goods and services produced in the U.S. over a year), a rise in unemployment and falling stock prices can all signal a recession is coming, according to the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/taxedu\/glossary\/recession\/\"> Tax Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A recession typically lasts more than six months and it can take a country years to recover.<\/p>\n<p><h2><strong>How to prepare for a recession<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. isn\u2019t in a recession right now. But experts say it\u2019s best to prepare beforehand in case trouble strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Newell, certified financial planner and owner of Newell Wealth Management, told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7266970\/how-to-prepare-for-a-recession\/\"><em>Time<\/em><\/a> that people should ramp up their savings to prepare for potential layoffs \u2014 which often go hand-in-hand with recessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure [people] have enough cash reserves, hopefully without having to touch a 401(k), or anything of that nature, to live,\u201d Newell told the magazine. <\/p>\n<p>He suggests that a two-income household should have three months of expenses saved, while a single-income household should have six months of expenses saved.<\/p>\n<p>Newell also warned that workers \u2014 especially younger ones \u2014 should keep investing in their retirement account and shouldn\u2019t panic if they see their 401(k) go down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stock market will start declining before a recession happens,\u201d he told <em>Time<\/em>. \u201cAnd oftentimes people&#8217;s 401(k) are tied to the stock market, so they may see value go down. They should know not to panic, because they have the time to make it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h2><strong>Is the U.S. in a recession?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>No, the U.S. is not currently in a recession. Despite layoffs across the federal government, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/donald-trump-americans-white-house-employers-labor-department-b2712974.html\">overall job market has remained sturdy<\/a>, so far.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, four of the six indicators measured by the National Bureau of Economic Research are pointing toward economic growth, ZipRecruiter\u2019s chief economist Julia Pollack told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-a-recession-economy-trump\/\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But an increasing number of economists see the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/odds-of-recession-economy-betting-markets-polymarket-gdp-growth-trump-2025-3\">odds of a future recession rising<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><h2><strong>How could a recession impact me?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The impacts of a recession will vary from one person to another.
