One of his last large-scale endeavors was the musical \u201cWalk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice,\u201d for which he wrote the book and score, and which he performed in a run at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/04\/theater\/walk-on-through-review-gavin-creel.html\" title=\"\">MCC Theater in 2023<\/a>. The show, which The New York Times\u2019s Michael Paulson described as \u201ca passion project\u201d in his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/30\/theater\/gavin-creel-dead.html\" title=\"\">obituary for Creel<\/a>, allowed the actor to venture into soul-searching as he explored his (very new) relationship with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fortunately, that institution, which had commissioned the project, keeps a capture of an October 2021 performance on YouTube.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-a8d035c\">\u2018[Untitled Miniature]\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/urhere.art\/premieres\/miniature\/info\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Stream it at HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As a theater maker, Joshua William Gelb fully came into his own with his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/18\/theater\/joshua-william-gelb-theater-in-quarantine.html\" title=\"\">Theater in Quarantine productions<\/a>, which he performed and streamed live from a closet in his home, often displaying uncommon technical mastery. From Tuesday through March 25, he continues to explore the live-digital hybrid with a new project that sounds closer to the experiments of such artists as Marina Abramovic than to traditional theater, and in which he will push the boundaries of his own endurance. In \u201c[Untitled Miniature],\u201d Gelb will spend 24 nonconsecutive hours (in 45-minute segments spread over eight days) naked inside a box that\u2019s about 3 feet wide by less than 2 feet tall. Despite (or perhaps because of) the limited space, his movement will be choreographed. Audience members can buy tickets for either the physical performances, to be held at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/here.org\/shows\/untitled-miniature\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>, or for a live feed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lolst.org\/beckettbriefs\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Stream it from the League of Live Stream Theater<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Irish Repertory Theater has been among the most proactive New York companies when it comes to making its productions available online. Right after its omnibus \u201cBeckett Briefs\u201d closes its live run, it will be available on demand for an extra couple of weeks, from Sunday through March 30; the cost is $39 (Irish Rep members get 20 percent off). Directed by Ciaran O\u2019Reilly, the 75-minute show is made up of three relatively short pieces \u2014 \u201cNot I,\u201d \u201cPlay\u201d and \u201cKrapp\u2019s Last Tape\u201d \u2014 which are \u201cabout mortality and memory,\u201d as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/01\/theater\/cymbeline-beckett-briefs-f-murray-abraham-review.html\" title=\"\">Laura Collins-Hughes<\/a> wrote in The New York Times. The last, in particular, stars \u201can understatedly masterful F. Murray Abraham.\u201d We can only wish more companies would follow Irish Rep\u2019s example in making parts of a run available online.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3d78183f\">\u2018Who Am I This Time?\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justwatch.com\/us\/movie\/who-am-i-this-time\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Stream it on Hoopla and Plex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire\u201d pays one of its regular visits to the New York stages (this time starring Paul Mescal and Patsy Ferran, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/11\/theater\/streetcar-named-desire-review-mescal-ferran.html\" title=\"\">at the Brooklyn Academy of Music<\/a>), now is a good time to check out this film that the director Jonathan Demme made for public television\u2019s American Playhouse in 1982. Christopher Walken plays Harry, a hardware store clerk so shy that he\u2019s barely verbal. Put him onstage, though, and he comes to charismatic life \u2014 he needs to play a role to fully express himself. When new-to-town Helene (Susan Sarandon) is cast as Stella opposite Harry\u2019s Stanley in an amateur company\u2019s production of \u201cStreetcar,\u201d sparks fly. But what happens when they need to interact outside, or when they play other roles? Based on a story by Kurt Vonnegut, \u201cWho Am I This Time?\u201d is a lovely miniature that is very perceptive about the transformative power of acting. Walken and Sarandon are surprisingly simpatico as two loners who blossom onstage, and as a bonus the Velvet Underground\u2019s John Cale wrote the original score.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-529492ad\">\u2018Grounded\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On March 21 at 9 p.m., the long-running PBS series Great Performances premieres the Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (\u201cFun Home,\u201d \u201cKimberly Akimbo\u201d) and the librettist George Brant\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/07\/arts\/music\/grounded-jeanine-tesori-george-brant-met-opera.html\" title=\"\">\u201cGrounded,<\/a>\u201d which was captured at the Metropolitan Opera. Based on Brant\u2019s own play of the same name, the opera follows the emotional and psychological travails of Jess, a former fighter-jet pilot who now wages war at a distance by operating a drone. Although the one-woman original (<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/04\/27\/theater\/anne-hathaways-solo-turn-as-a-fighter-pilot-in-grounded-at-the-public-theater.html\" title=\"\">an Off Broadway production in 2015 starred Anne Hathaway<\/a>) has been beefed up to feature more characters, Jess remains its center and the weight of the show falls on Emily D\u2019Angelo\u2019s shoulders \u2014 happily, she is up to the task. In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/24\/arts\/music\/review-grounded-metropolitan-opera-jeanine-tesori-george-brant.html\" title=\"\">his review for The New York Times<\/a>, Zachary Woolfe praised her as \u201cthe best thing about \u2018Grounded,\u2019\u201d and also noted the \u201cmelted-gold tenor and easygoing charm\u201d of Ben Bliss as Jess\u2019s husband.
