Recently, he teamed up with Roche Bobois, also renowned for its splashy color sense, to modify classic works from the French furniture company\u2019s catalog that will be introduced in Roche Bobois\u2019s Milan showroom during the city\u2019s Design Week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Lounge sofa, for example, a precursor of the company\u2019s modular Mah Jong seating that was originally designed in 1971 by Hans Hopfer, is being reissued in an edition of 50 for this occasion. Each sofa will feature iconic images from Almod\u00f3var movies and film posters, and will be signed and numbered by the director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Also on view will be the 11-year-old Bubble sofa, designed by Sacha Lakic. Bubble will be shown in four new colors \u2014 sky, moss, sun and fiery red \u2014 that are heroes of Mr. Almod\u00f3var\u2019s most recent film, \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/19\/movies\/the-room-next-door-review.html\" title=\"\">The Room Next Door<\/a>,\u201d a meditation on friendship and death starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, which was released late last year. (The sofa itself has a cameo in that movie, popping up in a scene set in a gym.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A sideboard from Roche Bobois\u2019s Rondo<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>collection has been updated with new door panels featuring designs inspired by film posters and Almod\u00f3var\u2019s own still-life photos. The director also designed rugs and cushions that have movie poster motifs, including the floral pattern representing \u201cVolver\u201d (2006), the heavily mascaraed eyes from \u201cWomen on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown\u201d (1988) and the deadly stiletto signifying \u201cHigh Heels\u201d (1991).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Apart from the limited-edition Lounge sofa, the collection will be available for purchase in mid-September, in Roche Bobois stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think these are pieces of furniture you can truly live with, and they evoke a very positive feeling,\u201d Mr. Almod\u00f3var wrote in an email. \u201cThe colors and patterns I\u2019ve chosen reflect an intense joie de vivre. I believe that waking up and walking on that rug, or sitting on one of these pieces, will give you a sense of optimism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u00c9ric Amourdedieu, the executive director of Roche Bobois Group, wrote in an email, \u201cThis collaboration with Pedro Almod\u00f3var is a celebration of color, emotion and creative boldness. His unique perspective has breathed new energy into iconic Roche Bobois pieces, creating a vibrant collection inspired by the artist\u2019s singular use of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Almod\u00f3var said his early aesthetic inspiration for his color sense was late 1950s cinema. \u201cI seek that explosion of Technicolor that corresponds to the colors of my childhood. And also to my own state of mind. But also to that of the characters I create, because these characters \u2014 whom I sometimes place in extreme situations \u2014 are very baroque, very flamboyant. This kind of coloration suits them best.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two hues have dominated his cinematic palette, Mr. Almod\u00f3var said. \u201cI remember, for instance, that red has always been present.\u201d And he recalled using green for the first time in \u201cTie Me Up! Tie Me Down!,\u201d<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>released in 1989: \u201cThere was a green sofa on which Victoria Abril appeared,\u201d he said referring to the film\u2019s star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Those colors remain prominent in \u201cThe Room Next Door<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">,\u201d <\/em>appearing in furnishings, clothing, makeup, cars and more. In the house in which much of the movie takes place, for example, a Roche Bobois Allusion sofa, also designed by Sacha Lakic, has been upholstered in a green fabric. On the terrace, a pair of Bitta deck chairs from Kettal appear, one in green, the other in a rusty red. Ms. Moore\u2019s character drives a red Volvo XC60. When she goes to the gym, her trainer has on bright red socks. Both she and the character played by Ms. Swinton have a fondness for red lipstick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For the project, his first full-length feature film in English, Mr. Almod\u00f3var collaborated with the production designer Inbal Weinberg. The house belonging to Ms. Swinton\u2019s character is supposed to be in upstate New York, but is actually in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a small town near Madrid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cA lot of my work was making sure things felt like they could be in New York and still have Pedro\u2019s signature style,\u201d said Ms. Weinberg by phone. A great many modifications were made to the home, including repainting all the interior walls a warmer white, replacing all of the existing furniture and objects, covering the pale wood elements with slightly darker and warmer cladding \u2014 even landscaping the grounds to represent the American Northeast and to include some bright red flowers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Weinberg said the intense palette was meant as a counterpoint to the tragic story line, which, based on a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/08\/books\/review\/sigrid-nunez-what-are-you-going-through.html\" title=\"\">novel<\/a> by Sigrid Nunez, involves the planned suicide of a terminally ill character. Mr. Almod\u00f3var \u201creally wanted to step away from that and say, \u2018No, we\u2019re celebrating life. Life goes on around us, and there\u2019s beauty everywhere.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the same time, she added, they made the visual tone perhaps less vibrant than other Almod\u00f3var films to reflect the somber plot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The process of getting the set ready for shooting, Ms. Weinberg said, meant bringing in all the elements to test, often multiple times. \u201cYou can\u2019t make decisions on one aspect of the visual design in a vacuum; it all has to come together for him to know if it\u2019s working or not,\u201d she said of the director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI never request just one sofa \u2014 I ask for two or three to have options,\u201d Mr. Almod\u00f3var confirmed. Once the floor and wall colors are locked in, the furniture is next, then the characters themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI position the actor or actress on the sofa, also testing different costumes and dresses,\u201d he said. \u201cAt that point, it becomes three-dimensional \u2014 I work like a painter, but with objects rather than just colors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Does his own home look like any of his films?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Well, not entirely, he said. \u201cAt home, I decorate less. It is essentially a collection of furniture used in my films, but less harmonious than in the movies. Sometimes it looks like a furniture store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Almod\u00f3var added: \u201cFor me, living in a space filled with furniture \u2014 maybe even too much furniture \u2014 doesn\u2019t bother me. I don\u2019t feel overwhelmed by it.
