{"id":4045,"date":"2025-08-01T16:34:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T16:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/business\/last-wheat-delivered-to-largest-bioethanol-plant-under-threat-after-trade-deal\/"},"modified":"2025-08-01T16:34:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T16:34:20","slug":"last-wheat-delivered-to-largest-bioethanol-plant-under-threat-after-trade-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/business\/last-wheat-delivered-to-largest-bioethanol-plant-under-threat-after-trade-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Last wheat delivered to largest bioethanol plant under threat after trade deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"main\">\n<div class=\"hydrate-root sc-10wlkbs-0\" data-component=\"Newsletter\" data-loading=\"lazy\" data-theme-name=\"base\">\n<aside class=\"sc-y4bm30-0 jwWhkK newsletter-component sc-1ge0fwe-0\" data-newsletter-key=\"receiveIndyBreakingNews\">\n<div class=\"sc-y4bm30-2 kcLSBk\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-y4bm30-1 inRDZn\">\n<div class=\"sc-y4bm30-3\">\n<div class=\"sc-y4bm30-4 hfveGa\">\n<p><h3 class=\"sc-y4bm30-5 sc-y4bm30-6 fvoxRM dRzeRr\">For free real time breaking news alerts sent straight to your inbox sign up to our breaking news emails<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"sc-y4bm30-5 sc-y4bm30-8 fvoxRM knvhy\">Sign up to our free breaking news emails<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"sc-y4bm30-5 sc-y4bm30-7 fvoxRM kbCQAZ\">Sign up to our free breaking news emails<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><svg class=\"sc-eaj12q-0 hKcUSR sc-culv3z-0 eifaJK sc-1ix0cah-0 jKIGjX sc-y4bm30-10 fUEDPX\"><use href=\"#600f53465147d717\"\/><\/svg><\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-y4bm30-2 kcLSBk sc-y4bm30-9 iQYNfz\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/static-assets\/images\/newsletters\/breakingNews1_1.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Breaking News\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UK\u2019s largest bioethanol plant says it has received its final scheduled wheat delivery as crisis talks continue with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/government\">Government<\/a> to try to keep it open.<\/p>\n<p>Vivergo Fuels, near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/hull\">Hull<\/a>, has said it is facing closure within weeks following the decision to end the 19% tariff on American bioethanol imports as part of the recent UK-US trade deal.<\/p>\n<p>The plant buys more than a million tonnes of British wheat each year from more than 4,000 farms and says it has purchased from 12,000 individual farms over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Managing director Ben Hackett wrote to growers earlier this year explaining that the plant will only be able to honour existing contractual obligations for wheat purchases while uncertainty continues.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hackett said the last scheduled load arrived at the plant on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Vivergo, which is owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/associated-british-foods\">Associated British Foods<\/a> (ABF), said it is was beginning consultation with staff to wind down the plant, which employs more than 160 people, due to the uncertain situation \u2013 a process which could see production stop before September 13, if support is not provided.<\/p>\n<p>It said Britain\u2019s two largest bioethanol producers \u2013 Vivergo and Ensus in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/teesside\">Teesside<\/a> \u2013 are now in urgent negotiations with the Government.<\/p>\n<p>The firms say the UK-US trade deal and regulatory constraints on the industry have made it impossible to compete with heavily subsidised American products.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hackett said on Friday: \u201cWe have a choice of going down a path of stagnation, decline, unemployment, economy shrinking, or we have a choice of going towards a path of investment, growth, prosperity, job creation, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s crucially important that the Government comes to a decision quickly, and comes to a decision in favour of supporting the UK bioethanol industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farmer Matt Pickering, of Pickering and Sons, near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, sold the last load of wheat to Vivergo.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pickering said: \u201cWe struggle with the quality of our land type, so we tend to go for out-and-out bulk volume shed fillers. Vivergo has been a fantastic home for us to sell feed wheat into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike Green, owner of haulage company AgHaul, who transported the last load to the plant, said: \u201cWe\u2019re in the dark. We don\u2019t know where we\u2019re going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very uncertain, uncharted waters, and it\u2019s worrying as we\u2019ve already seen a decline in work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The landmark came as Meld Energy said the uncertainty over the plant is putting its plans for a \u201cworld-class\u201d green jet fuel project on the Humber in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Meld Energy signed a \u00a31.25 billion agreement with Vivergo Fuels to anchor a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) facility at Saltend Chemicals Park in Hull.<\/p>\n<p>Meld Energy chief executive and founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/chris-smith\">Chris Smith<\/a> said: \u201cWe\u2019re excited about the potential to bring our sustainable aviation fuel project to the Humber \u2013 one of the UK\u2019s most important industrial and energy hubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, for projects like ours to succeed and the flow of vital investment to be forthcoming, we need a strong and integrated low-carbon ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bioethanol plant on site at Saltend is a critical part of that mix.
