You know how they go. They aren\u2019t about deep dives or long sits. They\u2019re about tuxes and gowns, purses and pockets, a bite of this and a sip of that, hearty cheers and fiscal years. They\u2019re there to keep the good times rolling (and the doors open).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">As such, the fare on the program for Saturday night\u2019s National Symphony Orchestra season-opening gala at the Kennedy Center took a crowd-pleasing cue from the trays of hors d\u2019oeuvres circulating upstairs on the Terrace. It was an evening of snackable melodies and motifs, an unexpectedly filling sampling of the orchestra\u2019s strongest features, and a welcome showcase of the talent in its ranks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">And why not? After all, this is an orchestra with much to celebrate. The NSO\u2019s 93rd season marks seven years of direction under Gianandrea Noseda, who in April will celebrate his 60th birthday. The orchestra\u2019s newly minted executive director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/music\/2023\/01\/11\/jean-davidson-named-nso-executive-director\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jean Davidson<\/a>, introduced the evening and launched her inaugural season with news from the stage that the NSO has been shortlisted by Gramophone for <a href=\"https:\/\/reader.exacteditions.com\/issues\/112264\/spread\/61\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">orchestra of the year<\/a> honors \u2014 one of 10 nominees and just two American orchestras (along with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). And a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedy-center.org\/nso\/home\/about\/nso-on-tour\/nso-europe-tour-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European tour in February<\/a> \u2014 the orchestra\u2019s first tour since 2016, and its first under Noseda \u2014 will bring the NSO to nine cities in Spain, Italy and Germany.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">So it\u2019s a big year ahead for the whole operation. And even without the driving rain outside, there was a prevailing sense that we\u2019d all weathered a storm to get here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Rossini\u2019s rollicking 1817 overture to \u201cLa gazza ladra\u201d (i.e. \u201cThe Thieving Magpie\u201d) led the evening, its rousing stereo pair of opening snares manned from the balconies by assistant principal Erin Dowrey and principal percussionist Eric Shin, its regal introductory passage lending a fitting frisson of celebratory pomp to the circumstances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">So chockablock with delightful little melodic moments is \u201cLa gazza\u201d that it can be easy to forget that it\u2019s about the pending execution of a servant over a misplaced spoon. (Involuntary flashbacks to its employment throughout Kubrick\u2019s \u201cA Clockwork Orange\u201d can help restore some of the darkness to its rambunctious levity.) Noseda drew electric energy and witty precision from its busy stretches of strings, and assistant principal oboist Jamie Roberts made splendid, lucid work of its beloved lilting solo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Edward Elgar\u2019s 1905 \u201cIntroduction and Allegro\u201d (a reincarnated and ramped-up concerto grosso) served to showcase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/music\/2023\/04\/14\/noseda-nso-antique-instruments\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the NSO strings<\/a>, a performance both anchored and heightened by the core quartet of associate concertmaster Ying Fu, assistant principal violinist Dayna Hepler, assistant principal violist Abigail Evans Kreuzer and assistant principal cellist Glenn Garlick. Its rapturous central fugue, its searing sonority and plunging depths were all brought to gleaming life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The short, sweet and substantial centerpiece of the program was \u201cFate Now Conquers,\u201d a compact but harmonically rich response to Beethoven\u2019s Seventh Symphony (specifically the second movement that earned encores at its 1813 premiere) by Kennedy Center composer in residence Carlos Simon. Given a virtual premiere in 2020 by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the piece has become Simon\u2019s most widely performed work, and it\u2019s plain to hear why.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Its title comes from a line penned in one of Beethoven\u2019s notebooks, itself lifted from Book 22 of \u201cThe Iliad,\u201d and though just five minutes in length, it aspires to an epic sonic scale. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/08\/25\/tanglewood-carlos-simon-jacobs-pillow\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At a talk at Tanglewood<\/a> earlier this summer, Simon revealed his love for the scores of John Williams, an affinity perhaps most evident here in the conversational ease between a soli of two muted trumpets (played by assistant principal Michael Harper and Timothy McCarthy) and principal cellist David Hardy\u2019s cello. Busy undercurrents of strings built to tempestuous peaks, long girders of brass offered structural support and Simon\u2019s facility with complex rhythms reaffirmed itself as one of his signature strengths. Now entering his third year in residence and sporting a recent Grammy nomination for his recording of \u201cRequiem for the Enslaved,\u201d Simon\u2019s rising star is one of the NSO\u2019s brightest features.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">On paper, \u201cPictures at an Exhibition\u201d is a musical chronicle of Mussorgsky\u2019s visit to an 1874 art exhibition (a memorial collection of works by his friend, the painter Viktor Alexandrovich Hartmann). Left unpublished, the suite was salvaged first by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov as a solo piano suite, further orchestrated by one of his students, and, decades later at the behest of Serge Koussevitzky, properly arranged for orchestra (in its most familiar and enduring form) in 1922 by Maurice Ravel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">In practice, it\u2019s a piece that methodically moves through the orchestra, allowing each pocket of musicians to catch the listener\u2019s ear as though we were strolling. The recurring \u201cPromenade\u201d recasts itself as though from different angles and in different light, and the artworks themselves assert their individual colors while (ideally) resolving into something collective and whole.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"wpds-c-gnhuPA wpds-c-gnhuPA-hqeSyH-variant-interstitial wpds-c-gnhuPA-iPJLV-css hide-for-print\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/newsletters\/style-memo\/?method=SURL&amp;location=ART&amp;itid=lk_interstitial_manual_24\">Sharp. Witty. Thoughtful. Sign up for the Style Memo newsletter.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Noseda coaxed out beautiful balance between the brass and the strings \u2014 with special credit going to the cool, clean, substantial tuba of Stephen Dumaine. Other highlights included the silky saxophone underlining \u201cIl vecchio castello\u201d played by Paul Tucker (a guest player from <a href=\"https:\/\/usarmyband.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pershing\u2019s Own<\/a>); the bristling snares and percussion in \u201cBydlo\u201d; and the effervescent scherzo of the marketplace scene (\u201cLimoges \u2014 The Market\u201d). The penultimate \u201cBaba-Yaga\u201d section floated atop beautiful dialogue between the woodwinds and harps, and the big finish (an homage to Hartmann\u2019s never-finished design for \u201cThe Great Gate of Kiev\u201d) was graceful and grand, as Noseda took his time setting off its fireworks, savoring the moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">And this is the time to do it.
