Previously, it has only been offered to cancer patients on the NHS, where it has demonstrated significant success.<\/p>\n<p>The treatment functions by genetically modifying a patient&#8217;s own cells, re-engineering the immune system to recognise and attack problematic cells, thereby offering the chance of a cure.<\/p>\n<p>A new NHS trial, spearheaded by University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) and University College London (UCL), saw five out of six severe lupus patients achieve remission within months of CAR-T treatment. <\/p>\n<p>Over an average 11-month follow-up, rapid improvements in disease markers were observed, including stabilisation or enhancement of kidney function previously damaged by lupus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-awdjp1-2 cbpRGD sc-awdjp1-3 healthy tissues, causing widespread inflammation and damage to organs such as the kidneys, lungs and heart.<\/p>\n<p>It can range from mild to severe, with symptoms including joint pain, skin problems, fatigue and inflammation of major organs.<\/p>\n<p>Around 69,000 people in the UK are thought to have the condition, which mostly affects women.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Karl Peggs, director of UCLH\u2019s biomedical research centre, told the Press Association that CAR-T could offer people the chance of a cure, although bigger studies were needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings are truly groundbreaking and offer fresh hope to people living with lupus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile more research is needed, the possibility that CAR T-cell therapy could deliver an immune reset and potentially free patients from the cycle of chronic autoimmune disease marks a remarkable step forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf these results are confirmed in larger studies, the prospect of a cure for lupus may no longer be out of reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Claire Roddie, an investigator on the trial from UCL Cancer Institute and a UCLH consultant haematologist, said: \u201cFor patients living with severe lupus that has not responded to existing treatments, the options can be very limited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings provide early evidence that CAR T-cell therapy may be able to reset the immune system and drive meaningful clinical improvements after a single treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough these are still early days, the results mark an important step forward in exploring how -->(<!-- -->PA<!-- -->)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>With CAR-T, a person\u2019s own T cells, which are crucial for hunting out infected or damaged cells, are genetically engineered by scientists and fed back into the patient via an infusion to \u201cre-set\u201d the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>The CAR-T in the trial was obecabtagene autoleucel (obe-cel), developed by UCL spinout firm Autolus Therapeutics.<\/p>\n<p>Obe-cel is designed to target and deplete CD19-positive B cells, which play a central role in lupus.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Tinkler was forced to give up her job as a fitness instructor because of debilitating pain and fatigue caused by the severe lupus she has had since she was 20.<\/p>\n<p>Lupus caused her to suffer very swollen and painful joints, kidney damage that meant she was close to needing dialysis, lung and heart disease, and a tendency to develop blood clots.<\/p>\n<p>She also suffered sepsis and multi-organ failure due to lupus, and was put in a coma in intensive care.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the 52-year-old from Guildford, Surrey, who is married to Simon and has three children, Isabelle, 25, Evie, 21, and Zac, 19, is in remission thanks to CAR-T she had at UCLH.<\/p>\n<p>She told PA: \u201cThinking about how life was for beforehand and how it is now, it\u2019s like night and day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy whole system was affected by lupus and my joints were so painful that sometimes I couldn\u2019t walk. I couldn\u2019t use my hands to pick up mugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy kidneys, heart and lungs were all getting worse. For the last 10 years we\u2019ve gone skiing as a family but I haven\u2019t physically even left the apartment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis January I skied for the first time in 10 years \u2026 I was arms out, head to the sky and \u2018Oh my god\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe skiing was phenomenal, and to be able to participate \u2026 it was massive. It was a symbol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy youngest child, he\u2019s 20 this year, so for 10 years now he can\u2019t remember me previously. My children can\u2019t remember me participating in things before now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Tinkler said she can now park away from shops rather than thinking she needs to park very close by.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cRegularly for years, when the kids were at school, I\u2019d get up in my pyjamas, drop them to school in my pyjamas, come back to bed, stay in bed, put the alarm on for 2.50pm, get up and go back, pick them up, and then survive til my husband came home. That was my life for years\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter treatment, it was my daughter\u2019s wedding and I was up at 6am getting ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t even see the guests in the evening because I was on the dance floor the whole time. A year before, that would have been completely different day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Tinkler has been able to come off all steroid treatment and the other cocktail of drugs that were keeping her alive.<\/p>\n<p>She now takes just two tablets a day to prevent blood clots and keep her blood pressure low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s miraculous for me,\u201d she said. \u201cMy life two years ago versus now, it\u2019s unrecognisable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel blessed. Five out of six patients given the lower dose are already in remission.<\/p>\n<p>The new findings were presented at the EULAR European Congress of Rheumatology in London last week.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, biology teacher Emily Henders became the first patient in the UK to receive CAR-T to treat multiple sclerosis.
