DJs oontz-oontzed from their booths. Party sponsor Campari served a menu of negronis, spritzes and Garibaldis, complete with branded \u201cNYFF\u201d ice cubes, and light displays bathed partygoers in the aperitif\u2019s signature rich, flattering carmine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Still, something felt a little off. A little melancholy. While thousands of movie and TV writers are celebrating<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/2023\/09\/26\/hollywood-writers-strike-ends\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the end of a nearly five-month work stoppage <\/a>that crippled Hollywood, the industry\u2019s actors remain on strike, prohibited from promoting their projects, and therefore conspicuously absent from the festival.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Last year, Greta Gerwig, Adam Driver, Don Cheadle, Lars Eidinger and Jodie Turner-Smith were on hand for the festival\u2019s first day, talking up their roles in Noah Baumbach\u2019s \u201cWhite Noise.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">By contrast, the audience at the Lincoln Center on Friday applauded screenwriter Samy Burch, who was able to make her first promotional appearance for \u201cMay December\u201d now that the writers strike has ended. And director Todd Haynes gave a speech lamenting the absence of cast members such as Natalie Portman, Charles Melton and Julianne Moore, who plays a middle-aged woman married to the man she had an illegal sexual relationship with when he was a child.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"wpds-c-gnhuPA wpds-c-gnhuPA-hqeSyH-variant-interstitial wpds-c-gnhuPA-iPJLV-css hide-for-print\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/newsletters\/style-memo\/?method=SURL&amp;location=ART&amp;itid=lk_interstitial_manual_13\">Sharp. Sign up for the Style Memo newsletter.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cThere are some missing people here tonight, and I confess I\u2019m still in a bit of a state of denial, that things didn\u2019t get resolved the way we thought they would before tonight,\u201d Haynes said. \u201cWe miss you guys. We stand by you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Friday\u2019s festivities weren\u2019t entirely devoid of actors, who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2023\/07\/13\/sag-aftra-strike-notice-2023-actors\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibited <\/a>by their union from promoting their films, but not partying in general. There\u2019s even the chance that an A-lister could turn up later in the 17-day event \u2014 as Julia Louis-Dreyfus did at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/2023\/09\/01\/telluride-paul-mescal-andrew-scott-all-of-us-strangers\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Telluride Film Festival this month<\/a>, and Adam Driver and Patrick Dempsey did in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/photography\/interactive\/2023\/09\/06\/venice-film-festival-photos\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">But the strike overshadows everything, and many actors have been reluctant to attend even those events they are allowed to, concerned about the optics of solidarity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The whole night was a strange mix of rumination and celebration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The courtyard party was lively and shoulder-to-shoulder for hours. VIPs like the filmmaker Laura Poitras, composer Nicholas Britell and journalist Ronan Farrow feasted at ever-refilling buffet tables, and the coat checks stayed busy with late-arriving guests well past 11 o\u2019clock, when the passed hors d\u2019oeuvres turned from tuna tartare and croquettes to dainty slices of cheesecake and pineapple cake.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cYou feel a real lack, without the actors,\u201d said Christine Vachon, the producer of \u201cMay December.\u201d \u201cI think it\u2019s really hard, for example, on somebody like Charles Melton \u2014 who is a true discovery in \u2018May December\u2019 \u2014 that he can\u2019t be here celebrating his film.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">One of the few actors in attendance \u2014 Jeremy O.
