Britain\u2019s beauty industry has suffered a \u00a3850m slump in exports to the EU<\/a> since Brexit<\/a>, according to top economists.<\/p>\n

Experts<\/a> said the sector had suffered from customs hold-ups and increased red tape costs<\/a> since the UK quit the bloc in January 2020.<\/p>\n

The Oxford Economics study, commissioned by the British\u00a0Beauty Council, discovered a marked decline in exports to EU countries despite sales holding steady in the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

The research also found that the decline in EU workers had created skills shortage in the sector, while small beauty firms have been \u201cdisproportionately damaged\u201d by post-Brexit barriers.<\/p>\n

\u201cCovid is not the problem \u2013 Brexit is the problem,\u201d British Beauty Council chief Millie Kendall told Bloomberg. \u201cPeople have pulled out of territories.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah Chapman, founder of Skinesis, told the website her company has stopped exporting to Spain and had been hit by major problems in selling to Italy and others.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur distributors are now really insisting that unless we set up an EU warehouse, they won\u2019t work with us,\u201d she said. \u201cOnce somebody\u2019s bought from you,\u00a0if it takes so long to get a product, they just don\u2019t buy directly from you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The industry body shared the report during British beauty week, as it revealed that Kate Moss<\/a> was its new global ambassador.<\/p>\n

It comes as the latest study by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) that 49 per cent of UK exporters have struggled to boost sales.<\/p>\n

Among small and medium sized manufacturers, some 28 per cent reported a decrease in exports in the last quarter, while 45 per cent no change.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality is if UK business is to thrive, then we must export more, it\u2019s as simple as that,\u201d said BCC\u2019s head of trade William Bain.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the pandemic, supply chain disruption, Brexit, non-tariff trade barriers and global headwinds have all made this more difficult over the past few years \u2026 we need to look again at ways of improving trade with the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes as Kemi Badenoch<\/a>, the business and trade secretary, goes to Osaka, Japan for the G7 trade summit. The cabinet minister said she was \u201cnot worried at all\u201d by Labour denting the Tories\u2019 traditional image as the party of business.<\/p>\n

Ms Badenoch said Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s \u201chave not done their homework\u201d and \u201cassume the EU is the answer to everything\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
