The summer of 2023 was painted pink. The \u201cBarbie\u201d movie broke records at the box office<\/a> and inspired \u201cBarbiecore,\u201d an aesthetic \u201cmade up primarily of hot pink, and similarly bold rosy hues like fuchsia and magenta,\u201d according to a New York Times article about the rise of Barbie-inspired home d\u00e9cor.<\/a> \u201cEverything I buy is always a little bit Barbie-esque,\u201d said a homeowner who had outfitted her backyard with a hot-pink aboveground pool and shimmery floats.<\/p>\n

Different \u201ccore\u201d aesthetics, such as cottagecore<\/a> (bucolic and breezy), normcore (suburban and antifashion)<\/a> and darkroom-core<\/a> (dim and moody), have had their moments \u2014 and been subjects of Times articles \u2014 over the past decade.<\/p>\n

But how did \u201ccore,\u201d which may be derived from the Latin word \u201ccor,\u201d meaning heart<\/a>, come to delineate aesthetic styles?<\/p>\n

In its earliest appearances in The Times, \u201ccore\u201d was used to mean the central or innermost part of anything, a definition provided by Webster\u2019s New World Dictionary.<\/a> Ralph Waldo Emerson\u2019s eulogy for President Abraham Lincoln, which appeared in The Times in 1865<\/a>, described Lincoln as \u201csound to the core.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
