And to get there, he put on his headphones. \u201cI spent the next few months listening to every single Avett Brothers song, and taking notes on every single song \u2014 and they have recorded a lot of albums,\u201d recalled Logan, a Tony winner for his 2010 play, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/26\/AR2010032600260.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It was the start of a process of sorting the music, composing a script and combing historical records for a dark tale that, six years later, would unspool in Arena Stage\u2019s Kreeger Theater. \u201cSwept Away,\u201d the story of four men, adrift after their boat sinks in the Atlantic and compelled by extreme privation to conspire in a horrific act, starts a crucial engagement Saturday in a run that may determine whether it survives to run another day, on Broadway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Despite a director with a major r\u00e9sum\u00e9 (Michael Mayer of \u201cSpring Awakening\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/theater-dance\/2022\/09\/28\/lea-michele-funny-girl\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Funny Girl<\/a>\u201d); a cast including Broadway veterans John Gallagher Jr. and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/theater-dance\/2022\/11\/27\/juliet-romeo-max-martin-broadway\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stark Sands<\/a>, and a skilled book writer in Logan, a Times Square mooring is nowhere near settled. Based on real events and inspired by a 2004 album, \u201cMignonette\u201d by the Avett Brothers, a band led by Seth and Scott Avett, the 90-minute musical is compact and intense, certainly not the kind of fare that calls for jazz hands or tap shoes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cIt\u2019s a tricky piece,\u201d Mayer said, sitting in an Arena rehearsal room. \u201cI don\u2019t know that there\u2019s a template that this can fit into.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">That, of course, may be a good thing. Musical theater too often relies on tried-and-true formulas, reinforcing a creative stasis in the form. While \u201cSwept Away\u201d broadly belongs in the category of jukebox musical, its folk-rock songbook by no means qualifies as the sort of branded pop that has driven past hits such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/style\/2006\/06\/04\/forget-musical-comedies-let-tonys-swing-to-jersey\/07ab6f5f-b875-439d-8ff1-e900c4e94dd3\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jersey Boys<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/theater_dance\/as-rock-star-portrayals-go-it-doesnt-get-any-better-than-adrienne-warren-as-tina-turner\/2019\/11\/07\/79ee6c4c-0179-11ea-8bab-0fc209e065a8_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tina: the Tina Turner Musical<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/theater_dance\/beautiful-is-one-fine-night\/2015\/10\/08\/102bb1ce-6dcc-11e5-aa5b-f78a98956699_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.<\/a>\u201d Which are all celebrity biographies, polished off with familiar music.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cSwept Away\u201d is a musical with higher aspirations. Logan pored over hundreds of the Avetts\u2019 songs to settle on the 16 that would complete his narrative. As it turned out, only three songs made it into the musical from \u201cMignonette,\u201d the album the Avetts composed about the 1884 sinking of the yacht by that name, which went down during a voyage from England to Australia. Lost at sea for more than two weeks in a dinghy, the crewmen resorted to cannibalism to survive: Three of the crewmen were eventually rescued, and were subsequently charged with killing the fourth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">For Logan, the Avetts\u2019 music proved a stirring emotional and expositional framework for this strange and disturbing tale. The more he listened to a range of other Avett songs, the more the catalogue spoke to him about how to tell it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cThe song \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RbW08aKDoQ4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Murder in the City<\/a>,\u201d it\u2019s a beautiful song,\u201d Logan said, referring to a track for two guitars from the Avetts\u2019 2008 album \u201cThe Second Gleam.\u201d \u201cI thought, \u2018Oh, this is a song between two brothers.\u2019 So I made two of the characters brothers entirely based on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Landing \u201cSwept Away\u201d reflects Arena\u2019s ambition to be a developmental hub for musical-theater producers with Broadway in their sights. The Tony-winning smash hit \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/theater_dance\/dear-evan-hansen-radiates-charm-and-wit-and-thats-no-lie\/2015\/08\/03\/9a263ee4-390b-11e5-8e98-115a3cf7d7ae_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dear Evan Hansen<\/a>\u201d was birthed at Arena in 2015, several years after \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/12\/11\/AR2008121103978.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_3&itid=lk_inline_manual_17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Next to Normal<\/a>\u201d found its footing on the company\u2019s stages, and then went to Broadway, where it won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. More recently, the political musical comedy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/theater_dance\/despite-top-notch-cast-and-crew-dave-dissolves-into-camp-by-second-act\/2018\/07\/30\/7d3e28a0-9259-11e8-9b0d-749fb254bc3d_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dave<\/a>\u201d (2018) and the bio-musical \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/theater-dance\/2022\/08\/02\/american-prophet-douglass-arena-stage\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Prophet<\/a>\u201d (2022) used Arena as a testing ground.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The process was all totally new to Seth and Scott Avett, who live outside of Charlotte, when they were approached in 2014 by Matthew Masten, a budding theater producer. He found their longtime manager, Dolphus Ramseur, on Facebook. \u201cWhat do you think about an Avett Brothers musical?\u201d Masten emailed Ramseur.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cYou send one of those emails and half the time no one responds,\u201d Masten said in a Zoom interview with producing partners Sean Hudock and Jamie Forshaw, the latter from the Madison Wells Live company. (The partnership is underwriting some of the Arena production\u2019s costs.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cThe other half,\u201d Masten continued, \u201cthey say no, outright. But Dolphus responded almost immediately. He said, \u2018This sounds like an amazing idea.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The Avetts, too, were all for it \u2014 and really not that surprised by the proposal. \u201cI think when we\u2019re making something from our, you know, from our heart, you can see it being anything you believe that it can be,\u201d Scott Avett said in a joint Zoom with Seth. \u201cIt didn\u2019t seem so out of left field, especially considering it was partially inspired by a record that we made. And it had already put in our minds the legend and the great drama of that story. So to imagine it being retold in this dramatic way does line up pretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It so happened that one of the actors recruited for the project, John Gallagher Jr. \u2014 who won a Tony playing the troubled student Moritz in the original 2006 Broadway production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/2006\/12\/15\/on-broadway-the-promise-of-spring-and-a-fruitless-apple\/eed82984-adee-473e-9712-0f3199663169\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSpring Awakening\u201d<\/a> \u2014 was already a rabid Avett Brothers fan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cThis is how full circle this is for me,\u201d Gallagher said, in a joint interview backstage with the actors playing the other three pivotal crew members: Stark Sands, Wayne Duvall and Adrian Blake Enscoe. \u201cWhen I was doing \u2018Spring Awakening\u2019 with Michael Mayer on Broadway, I was such a die-hard Avett Brothers fan, I had a T-shirt I bought off their website. And anybody that came to the stage door \u2014 we had a lot of young kids coming to the stage door \u2014 I was wearing the shirt and I would tell them, \u2018You gotta listen to this band. They\u2019re so cool.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The actors have already been through a lot with \u201cSwept Away.\u201d They appeared together in the show\u2019s premiere production, under Mayer\u2019s direction, in 2022 at the Bay Area\u2019s Berkeley Rep, a run that occurred just as the omicron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_29\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"contextual_link\" rel=\"noopener\">coronavirus<\/a> variant took hold and wreaked havoc with the cast, staff and box office. The show sometimes played to houses only 30 percent full.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The other day, as the \u201ctech\u201d portion of the rehearsal period was underway, set designer Rachel Hauck and costume designer Susan Hilferty stood at the back of the Kreeger\u2019s orchestra seats, observing as the deck of a massive a wooden ship was being installed. Much of the hardware of the Berkeley Rep version has been transported to Arena. But at Mayer\u2019s urging, the human scale of the show has been expanded, with additional actors recruited to play ancillary crew members. The notion was to give the show\u2019s opening scenes more heft, and after the shipwreck, to heighten the impression of the surviving quartet\u2019s isolation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">What happens between now and the end of the year is an attempt to see how successfully the \u201cSwept Away\u201d concept floats. It also happens that the Avett Brothers will only now get their first live taste of how their songbook has been treated; the pandemic prevented them from attending the show in California.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cWe\u2019ll see it several times,\u201d Seth Avett said. \u201cBecause it\u2019s a once-in-a-lifetime thing and, for me, seeing it is so surreal.
