of massive, blockbusting world tours \u2014 with Taylor Swift\u2019s career-spanning \u201cEras\u201d tour and Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201cRenaissance\u201d world tour leading the pack \u2014 then this fall is the time to see them (or see them again) from the comfort of your neighborhood big screen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cRenaissance: A Film by Beyonc\u00e9\u201d follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/15\/business\/taylor-swift-eras-box-office\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record-breaking<\/a> success of Swift\u2019s \u201cEras\u201d movie in October. For those who missed the opportunity to see Beyonc\u00e9 live in all her glory \u2014 and in the company of thousands of disco-ball-inspired cowboy hats in the stadium show\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/beyonce-asks-fans-wear-silver-renaissance-tour-last-month-1235397952\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cHouse of Chrome\u201d<\/a>\u2014 this concert movie, directed and written by the queen herself, is a strong Plan B. (Or should we say Plan Bey?)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The film, a visually stunning behind-the-scenes look at the superstar\u2019s first world tour since 2016 and the latest piece in Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/11\/30\/beyonce-net-worth-renaissance-tour-earnings\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">half-a-billion-dollar empire<\/a>, gives fans an expansive, nearly-three-hour panorama of the singer\u2019s $579 million mega-tour. (To date, it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/music\/beyonce-renaissance-tour-by-the-numbers-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest-grossing<\/a> tour by a female artist ever.) Add in some well-timed insight into the inner workings of the Beyhive and the machine that is the \u201cRenaissance\u201d tour, as well as Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s role as the auteur behind it all, and the movie hits its marks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Though \u201cRenaissance\u201d doesn\u2019t venture far beyond conventional concert film tropes \u2014 a quick, nostalgia-fueled trip to Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s Houston hometown, for example, is at once heartwarming and clich\u00e9d \u2014 it succeeds as a film that knows its strengths lie in not its form but its content. The \u201cRenaissance\u201d tour, with all its surreal visuals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2023\/07\/13\/beyonce-renaissance-tour-fashion\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-fashion costumes<\/a> and heart-stopping choreography, is the star of the show. As it should be: Beyonc\u00e9 is best at doing what Beyonc\u00e9 does. She and the film\u2019s co-producers understand it\u2019s better to allow the collage of concerts at the movie\u2019s center to speak for themselves than to drown them out with bells and whistles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">Throughout, the film wrestles with how to define a tour and musical era that have been as impactful on Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s career as they were for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/11\/30\/beyonce-net-worth-renaissance-tour-earnings\/#:~:text=The%20Renaissance%20tour%20drew%20more,tourism%20in%20Beyonc%C3%A9%27s%20tour%20cities.?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">millions of fans<\/a> who came to see the tour over its five-month run. The \u201crenaissance,\u201d the film\u2019s many on-camera subjects muse, is a \u201cnew beginning,\u201d or a \u201crebirth,\u201d or a \u201chealing and hopeful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The thematic pulse of the \u201cRenaissance\u201d tour is, indeed, a lot of things. The 2022 album at its core, for one, is a sonic tribute to the house and dance music pioneered by Black artists in the 1970s and beyond. The tour\u2019s choreography, furthermore, calls to the rich, decades-long history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/oral-history-ballroom-pride-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ballroom culture<\/a>, the underground pageantry scene driven by queer Black and Latino communities and known for pioneering dance moves like voguing. The ballroom scene is also, the film informs us, where a subset of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s tour dancers, collectively known as the Dolls, have their roots.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cMy hope was the music from the \u2018Renaissance\u2019 would lead to some of these beautiful legends getting the flowers they deserve,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 says in the film \u2014 just before it cuts away to conversations with such dancers as Honey Balenciaga, Carlos Irizarry and Amari Marshall, a few of the many artists spotlighted. It\u2019s a move that contributes to an overwhelming sense of community, the feeling that Beyonc\u00e9 and her team are one big, happy family. Or, as Beyonc\u00e9 herself puts it: \u201cThere\u2019s so many bees in this hive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">The tour and its visuals take all these influences from Black and queer culture and incorporate them under an Afrofuturist aesthetic filled with robots, space exploration, high-fashion bodysuits and \u201call chrome\u201d everything. In the vein of other Afrofuturist works like Janelle Mon\u00e1e\u2019s \u201cDirty Computer\u201d or even \u201cBlack Panther,\u201d \u201cRenaissance,\u201d the film declares, is the \u201cpowerful ability to imagine a different Earth.\u201d In imagining this alternative reality, the tour skillfully holds feminism, queer culture and Black communities in the spotlight, giving the sense that the \u201cRenaissance\u201d is a safe and radically inclusive space for all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">It\u2019s here that the concert film truly shines. Joyous scenes of concert attendees dancing, crying and screaming along to songs while decked out in their silvery best give viewers the sense they\u2019re public witnesses to a cultural artifact in the making. \u201cThe audience is such an important part of the show,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 says early on in the movie. \u201cIt\u2019s more than a state of mind, it\u2019s a culture.\u201d Indeed, intimate shots of fans reveling in the joy of \u201cRenaissance,\u201d more so than Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s confessions about her personal life and the struggles of ultra-fame, form the emotive backbone of the film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">\u201cRenaissance,\u201d as a film, isn\u2019t concerned so much with helping audiences discover for themselves who Beyonc\u00e9 really is as it is about proving what we already know (or think we know) about her. Beyonc\u00e9, the movie argues through a series of vignettes, is an indefatigable worker, a dedicated wife and mother, a community builder, and an unapologetically driven artist. Audiences are given quick proof for each of these identities through interviews, archival footage and black-and-white montages, and the film chugs merrily along.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\">But while there are no salacious details or plot-moving drama about what makes Queen Bey tick \u2014 and there shouldn\u2019t be \u2014 \u201cRenaissance\u201d reveals something else, showcasing the joy to be found in cultural touchstones like the tour and the community built around it. At an early screening of the film, the theater was packed with fans wearing silver sequined pants, Beyonc\u00e9-branded fans and their best makeup. The point of a concert film, their presence argued, is, first and foremost, to make the concert experience accessible to more people. \u201cRenaissance\u201d knows that, and succeeds for that reason.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\"><b>Unrated.<\/b> At area theaters.
