{"id":928,"date":"2023-12-06T21:43:20","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T21:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/health\/what-the-mystery-canine-illness-means-for-your-dog\/"},"modified":"2023-12-06T21:43:20","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T21:43:20","slug":"what-the-mystery-canine-illness-means-for-your-dog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ventil.rs\/blog\/health\/what-the-mystery-canine-illness-means-for-your-dog\/","title":{"rendered":"What the \u2018Mystery\u2019 Canine Illness Means for Your Dog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/dog-respiratory-illness.html\" title=\"\">unidentified canine respiratory illness<\/a> continues to pop up in clusters around the United States \u2014 causing symptoms like cough, fever and lethargy, and in more serious cases, hospitalization or death \u2014 many dog owners are wondering what steps they should take to keep their pets safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite the alarming headlines about fatalities, veterinarians are urging pet owners to be careful, but not to panic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAt this point in time, I don\u2019t think there is reason for extreme alarm,\u201d said Dr. Deborah Silverstein, a professor of small animal emergency and critical care medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Ryan Veterinary Hospital. \u201cI do think it\u2019s a time to be cautious and to stay informed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">We talked to Dr. Silverstein and other experts about the strategies they recommend (and in some cases, are using in their own homes) to protect dogs\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-kypbrf eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6a867115\">Know your dog\u2019s risk factors.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though it is unclear whether the \u201cmystery illness\u201d is a new pathogen or a resurgence of a known bacterial or viral infection, dog owners should ensure their pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations, Dr. Silverstein said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Be mindful that some dogs are at higher risk for more serious complications if they get sick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe animals we really worry about getting severe infections are those that don\u2019t have a good immune system,\u201d Dr. Silverstein said. \u201cSo those would be very young animals, especially if they have not had a full series of vaccines, or very old animals, because they\u2019re more likely to have comorbidities or other diseases that may weaken their immune system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Brachycephalic or short-nosed breeds, like pugs and French and English bulldogs, also tend to have a harder time clearing respiratory tract infections, Dr. Silverstein said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-kypbrf eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-320db1ec\">Exercise caution around other dogs.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The surest way to keep dogs safe is to isolate them from other dogs, said Dr. Renee McDougall, a specialist surgeon with Bond Vet. She and her husband have a five-year-old pit bull mix, Rupert, who adores walks and sniffing other dogs. But for the past three weeks, she said, the couple have kept him from engaging in any \u201cnose-to-nose greetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy dog is so sad!\u201d Dr. McDougall admitted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe know how this disease typically spreads is through droplets and face-to-face interactions,\u201d she said. \u201cSo if we just avoid those scenarios, we\u2019re probably being as safe as we possibly can be.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But if you rely on doggy day care while you are at work, for instance, or if you intend to board your dog over the holidays, certain measures may help mitigate the risks in group settings.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-6bf72210\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Doggy day cares or boarding facilities:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ask about the facility\u2019s vaccine requirements and its screening policies, the two experts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMake sure that they\u2019re following strict guidelines with any dogs that are allowed in the building,\u201d Dr. Silverstein said. \u201cIf they show up, and they have a cough or a sneeze, they should not be let in.\u201d Though she cautioned that dogs probably shed the virus before they show any symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. McDougall recommended asking about the size of the group your dog will be spending time in. Is it, say, 30 dogs running around together? Will different dogs be present every day? Smaller, consistent groupings are better, she said. And ideally, dogs should not share toys or water bowls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou\u2019re the dog parent,\u201d Dr. McDougall said, acknowledging that many owners rely on outside facilities to care for their pups. \u201cYou decide how much risk you\u2019re willing to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-5a110d0f\"><span>Dog parks:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dog parks are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/06\/smarter-living\/the-dog-park-is-bad-actually.html\" title=\"\">already somewhat controversial<\/a>, Dr. Silverstein said, though she knows how beloved they can be. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But right now, she said it was \u201csafest to stay away from other dogs whose health status and vaccine status is unknown,\u201d unless you are certain there is \u201cvery little incidence of disease\u201d in your area. (Cases have been reported in several states, including Colorado, Massachusetts, Oregon and Rhode Island, but the number is growing and the illness is most likely more widespread, experts say.) Some communities have temporarily closed dog parks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As an alternative, Dr. Silverstein said dog owners might consider having a \u201cplay date\u201d with another dog whose health and vaccine status they know \u2014 though there is no guarantee of safety.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-kypbrf eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1ea4cf6\">When in doubt, reach out to your vet.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The vets we spoke to emphasized that pet owners should talk to their veterinarians if they have questions about whether there have been cases locally, or if they need help weighing their pet\u2019s risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Contact your veterinarian if you notice your dog coughing or experiencing nasal or eye discharge, Dr. Silverstein said. If your pet is otherwise eating and acting normally, the vet may advise monitoring it at home for 24 to 48 hours or may schedule a telehealth visit, Dr. McDougall said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dogs who seem lethargic or who are having difficulty breathing need immediate attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Silverstein and Dr. McDougall each said that veterinary practices were being careful to avoid exposure among patients, and acknowledged that many clinics and animal hospitals <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2022\/07\/not-enough-veterinarians-animals\/661497\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">were backed up<\/a>, so finding care may be easier said than done.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/06\/well\/family\/dog-respiratory-illness-safety.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As an unidentified canine respiratory illness continues to pop up in clusters around the United States \u2014 causing symptoms like cough, fever and lethargy, and in more serious cases, hospitalization or death \u2014 many dog owners are wondering what steps they should take to keep their pets safe.
